A BRISBANE riverside residence designed by a famous architect in 1937 will go to auction after the Sydney investors who purchased the property decided against a renovation.

Currently vacant, Hillside was designed for clothing manufacturer James Josephson by architect Eric Trewern, who was often considered the pioneer of the California Bungalow, Spanish Mission and Old English styles across Brisbane during the 1920s and 1930s.

The sprawling property has been described as “an outstanding example of a large Trewern house in face brick”, and it is currently owned by Sydney investors Andrew Rasby and Brigette Tyquin.

The couple bought the striking residence in 2014.

L-shaped, the house is built over three levels on a steeply sloping site with views across the Brisbane River.

It has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, space for four vehicles and sits on a 1031sqm block.

Features include casement windows with leadlight, a Marseilles tiled roof, timber floors, cornices, ceiling roses and chandeliers.

Interior spaces include a lounge with a fireplace, dining room, sunroom and living room. The kitchen features American oak and European appliances, with a wet bar opening out to the swimming pool and entertaining retreat.

The top floor is dedicated to a private master retreat with views of the Gateway, a dressing room with vaulted ceilings, and an ensuite with a spa bath.

Positioned behind secure gates with frontage to Hillside Crescent and Kingsford Smith Drive, the house features ample off-street parking and a remote four-car garage.

“In an extraordinary location, the famous Riverwalk is steps away, you are a stone’s throw from Portside Wharf and Racecourse Road, and fun and leisure await at nearby Crosby Park, Northshore Tennis Park, Royal Queensland Golf Club and Eagle Farm and Doomben Racecourse,” the listing by Ray White Ascot agents Damon Warat and Nick Roche says.

Within the Ascot State School catchment and close to private colleges and transport, the residence will go to auction on March 20 at 5.30pm.
