Hundreds of Bangladeshi garment factory workers were fired after they participated in protests throughout the country in October demanding higher wages, said three labor unions representing 500,000 employees.
According to Reuters, four employees were killed, while dozens of other people were injured after clashes broke out during the recent worker protests that ran alongside anti-government demonstrations.
The three organizations – Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, National Garment Workers Federation and Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity Council – estimated that between 1,000 and 5,000 workers had either been fired in the last two months or forced to go into hiding.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Labor did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Momanul Islam, a senior police official in the garment hub of Ashila, said that authorities have not arrested any garment workers for taking part in the protests.
The government had previously agreed to raise the minimum wage of garment workers by more than 56% to $114 a month back in November, a figure that is still too low many workers argue.
