Architect and Builder Collaborate to Select TandoStone® For…

Date:

An architect and contractor team was able to design a Modern Farmhouse look with TandoStone as the foundation cladding.

“With TandoStone®, the low upkeep and fact that it’s impervious to moisture is a huge selling point, and since this property is within 200 yards of the water, proven product performance was essential.” — Chris Moye, owner of Moye Construction

Architect Mark Milby, of Coastal Cottages and Chris Moye, owner of Moye Construction collaborated to select a composite stone solution to cover the foundation wall for an Outer Banks homeowner in North Carolina.

The duo selected TandoStone®, manufactured by Derby Building Products (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. TandoStone is the top-selling composite stone in the industry, with innovative Tando TruGrit™ texture that gives it the authentic feel and look of real stone. The high-tech composite construction is impervious to moisture and can be installed at ground level.

Acting as general contractor for Milby’s design, Moye explained, “Traditional masonry can be very costly—if you can even find someone to do the work. It takes more time, and weather conditions can delay the process. And with the elevated flood zone properties, masonry is not a viable option. With TandoStone®, the low upkeep and fact that it’s impervious to moisture is a huge selling point, and since this property is within 200 yards of the water, proven product performance was essential.”

Stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to Currituck Sound and Ginguite Creek, Southern Shores is a premiere residential community near Kitty Hawk on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Realtor Tammy Russell knows the area well, and wanted her dream home built in the community. A self-proclaimed perfectionist, Russell had a clear vision for the property—a light-colored modern farmhouse design situated on a beautifully manicured property. According to Russell, “Chris and Mark helped bring my vision to life.”

The home’s cladding was comprised of a composite siding with a horizontal lap-style on the lower portion with board and batten on the top.

Russell explained, “I had Chris space the batten strips 16″ apart so it was not too busy. I chose a crisp white paint for the body of the house with black windows. I painted the trim around the windows black to make them pop (black trim is a known Modern Farmhouse color trend). Chris did a louvered underpinning that we painted in a dark charcoal gray under the front porch, which created a simple contrast for the stone look of the foundation.”

After completing the top exterior of the house, Moye contacted Rob Mielke, veteran sales contractor with Guy C. Lee, who provided Moye and Russell with several TandoStone colors including Glacier Bay, Sedona Buff, Santa Fe, Chestnut Hills, and Lewiston Crest.

As an Outer Banks property, Russell’s home was built on pylons to comply with National Flood Insurance guidelines. Over the years, pylons have created a design challenge for architects and builders, both functionally and aesthetically.

Moye noted, “We wanted to stay away from the lattice work that many area homes have adopted to cover the pylons.”

Russell agreed explaining, “With the Modern Farmhouse look, it would have interfered with the design aesthetic, so we needed some different options.”

She recalled, “Rob Mielke laid out the TandoStone panels in various shades and styles and let me live with them for a few days. I ended up with the Stacked Stone in Lewiston Crest. The gray stone color really pulled the house together and grounded it. It’s is not something you see often in this area.”

The fact that traditional masonry was not required, allowed Moye and his crew to install the stone composite panels using carpentry skills instead of subcontracting.

The builder recalled, “I retrofitted the siding, so it looked like it was covering the stone. I installed a vapor barrier to protect the plywood and attached the panels directly to that with stainless steel trim screws and fasteners of the same color. There were no J-channels, and the TandoStone® corners are terrific—they create a seamless look. The result was a beautiful, authentic look.”

The Outer Banks region, steeped in history and geographical diversity, has been shaped and reshaped by weather events over the years. Locals have always had a great respect for the formidable storms that have reconfigured the landscape and have gradually adapted to the practicalities of living near water.

As a 35-year veteran builder, Moye has seen a shift in consumer attitudes regarding composite materials, which started with deck trim and railing, then moved to cladding, and most recently, stone veneer.

According to Moye, “The stone look for exteriors is starting to catch on here and I’m seeing more of it in stock. When installed properly, people can’t tell that it’s not real stone. I would recommend TandoStone to any client who wants to create a realistic stone look. With all new home builds up on pylons, we’ve had to adjust our approach. People are more willing to consider composite materials when they factor in the durability and authentic look.”

Over the years, Moye has earned a reputation for integrity and fine craftsmanship in the Eastern North Carolina region. According to Russell, “Chris was on the job every day. His attention to detail is amazing, and he was open to my ideas. I felt like we were partners throughout the process. He takes tremendous pride in his work. My neighbors saw his work and hired him to complete their addition.”

She added, “We absolutely love the place. The authentic stone look added to the overall exterior aesthetic. I’ve had people stop and say, ‘I love your home and I love the stone.’ They thought it was real stone!”
