AERA Highlights: 2023 Annual Meeting Presidential Program Theme Released, 2023 Annual Meeting to Be Held in Chicago and Online, and more!

The fourth of four items from the folks at the American Educational Research Association.  Researchers should note the theme for this year’s annual meeting of AERA and the 31 July deadline for the call for proposals.

2023 Annual Meeting Presidential Program Theme Released; Call for Submissions Coming May 31​

In the 2023 Annual Meeting Presidential Program theme—“Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth”—AERA President Rich Milner calls on education researchers to “be at the center of co-constructing with communities agendas of consequence that have a real bearing on disrupting ableism, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and other forms of discrimination.”

The call for submissions will open on May 31 and close on July 27.

2023 AERA Annual Meeting to Be Held in Chicago and Online

On April 13, AERA Council approved a resolution calling for the 2023 Annual Meeting to be held as a dual component meeting.

AERA Issues Statement on School Massacre in Texas

In a May 26 statement, AERA President Rich Milner and Executive Director Felice J. Levine extended their condolences to those who suffered loss from the senseless murders of children and teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and called on our nation’s leaders to act to stop the affliction of gun violence in American society.

AERA Speaks Out on the Racist Murders in Buffalo

In a May 16 statement, AERA President Rich Milner and Executive Director Felice J. Levine expressed sympathy for those affected by the rampage in Buffalo and “outrage that racism, compounded by deadly weapons, continues to take innocent lives in our country.”

AERA Launches 2022 Virtual Research Learning Series—Register Now

AERA launched the 2022 Virtual Research Learning Series on May 18, offering four professional development courses on important education research topics. Taught by leading experts in the field, the series runs to June 23.

JEBS Editor Team Extended and Expanded

AERA has announced that the current editorship of Steven Andrew Culpepper (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) for the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics has been extended one additional year through 2023. Joining Culpepper for the extended term will be Gongjun Xu (University of Michigan), who will serve as co-editor, effective immediately.​

The 2022 Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT) at the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center offers high-quality, state-of-the-art, and rigorous graduate training in all phases of survey research, as well as in the use of new types of data and methods (web scraping, machine learning, and sensor data) for conducting social research. Courses are held between June 6 and July 29.

AERA members who have recently passed away

Alexander “Sandy” Astin, 89, died on May 18. He was the Allan M. Cartter Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Higher Education and Organizational Change at the University of California, Los Angeles, and founder of the Higher Education Research Institute. Astin was an AERA Fellow and received the E. F. Lindquist Award in 1983. Read more

Jerry P. Becker, 85, died on April 16. He was a professor of mathematics education at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Education. Read more

Ronald K. Hambleton, 78, died on April 28. He was Distinguished University Professor and Executive Director of the Center for Educational Assessment at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Hambleton was an AERA Fellow; received the E. F. Lindquist Award, presented jointly by AERA and ACT, in 2005; and served as awards chair for Division D—Measurement and Research Methodologies. Read more

Gail McCutcheon, 81, died on May 8. She was a professor emerita at the Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology.

Michael A. Olivas, 71, died on April 22. Olivas, Professor Emeritus at the University of Houston Law Center, was an AERA Fellow, received the AERA Social Justice Award in 2014, and served on the AERA Minority Fellowship Selection Committee. Read more
