SuperWorld is building the future of social impact on blockchain
SuperWorld has from the very beginning set out to build a better world through augmented reality (AR). While other apps have taken a gaming approach, following on the heels of the breakout success of Pokemon Go, SuperWorld has grounded its AR approach in the real world, specifically in the areas of community support and the environment.
More recently, SuperWorld partnered with the World Bank-supported Disaster Fighters through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). Initially, the project scope was focused on building resources to prepare for and deal with hurricanes in weather-prone areas in the Caribbean through the minting and sale of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with country-specific activation — a novel and potentially powerful way to not only give in the immediate-term, but also ensure that giving continues long after this disaster leaves the headlines.
Last week, when the devastating earthquake occurred in Haiti, however, the two organizations pivoted to engage artists to create NFTs specifically to address that disaster, with food and recovery assistance focused (primarily) on response efforts in the region.
The earthquake in Haiti presents an enormous humanitarian challenge for a country already reeling from previous disasters and political upheavals. Traditional fundraising methods are a great way to help the country climb out of poverty and despair, and many people choose to donate to these global organizations. However, SuperWorld’s approach to the earthquake recovery gives us a glimpse into the future of fundraising and humanitarian support.
