Finnair has issued a modification to its traffic plans for summer 2022, citing prior worries about Asian-bound routes following Russia’s airspace restriction. From its headquarters in Helsinki, the airline will fly to over 70 European destinations, five North American destinations, and eight Asian destinations, including a new route to Mumbai. Finnair now offers daily flights to Bangkok, Delhi, Singapore, and Tokyo in Asia. The revival of Finnair’s antiquated North Pole route to evade flying space limitations over Russia, which had not been operated in over 30 years, helped to revive Tokyo. All additional routes to Japan, including Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and Fukuoka, which generally combine for 40 weekly flights, will be stopped through the summer of 2022. Despite the postponement of the introduction of a new Helsinki-Busan route, Finnair will maintain its three weekly flights to Seoul, two weekly flights to Hong Kong, and one weekly flight to Shanghai. Mumbai, the newest addition, will receive three flights every week. Finnair Chief Commercial Officer, Ole Orvér, noted, “Summer sees us increasing flights to over 300 daily flights. We continue to serve our key Asian destinations despite the longer routings caused by Russian airspace closure, and also have an excellent offering in Europe and North America.” Due to the Russian airspace shutdown, Finnair has suspended all further routes to Japan for the summer of 2022. Finnair had planned to operate 40 weekly flights between Tokyo Narita and Haneda airports, as well as Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and Fukuoka. Finnair has also decided to postpone the launch of its new Busan service.
