On October 4, 2022, Zion Williamson made his first appearance since May of 2021. Here’s a look at Zion Williamson’s return and a preview of the New Orleans Pelicans this year.
Zion’s Career
Back in September of 2021, Williamson broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. Earlier that year, he had suffered a thumb sprain. Many worried that Williamson, being 6-foot-6 and 284 pounds, would be injury prone throughout his career. Regardless of this, Zion still holds a five-year, $193 million deal with the Pelicans.
While this contract may seem excessive, Zion has more than proven his worth when he can play. Back in 2020, he put up 22.5 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game and 2.1 assists per game. However, he only made 24 appearances that year.
In 2021, he had an impressive 27 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game and 3.7 assists per game, being the only NBA player in history to average 27 points on 61% shooting. His effective field goal percentage was even higher, at 62%, and he was able to appear in 61 games that year.
Preseason
On October 4, 2022, Zion made his return. In a preseason outing against the Chicago Bulls, he put up 13 points, four rebounds and one assist. More importantly, Zion played well with his teammates and eliminated any doubts that he was not ready to come back.
After the game, Zion stated, “I’ve got a new team since the last time I played and I’m still learning some of the guys. Today, we were able to click.” Regarding the game itself, Zion said, “It was dope. It was my first time playing an NBA game in a long time. I’m most excited about playing the game I love and being out there with my team.”
Pelicans Roster
Like Zion mentioned, the Pelicans roster has had some changes since his last NBA game. The most notable is C.J. McCollum, who was traded to the Pelicans from the Portland Trail Blazers. In 26 appearances for the Pelicans, he notched 24.3 points per game, demonstrating his ability to take the role of a first or second option.
It will also be interesting to see how the Pelicans’ big three of Williamson, McCollum and forward Brandon Ingram share the ball. Other new players include Willy Hernangomez, Jose Alvarado and Larry Nance Jr.
Final Thoughts
Though Zion’s performance in his preseason return doesn’t match that of a couple years back, he shows promise and confidence in his ability to return. With Williamson, McCollum, and Ingram, the Pelicans look to be a powerhouse this season.
