You Can Use AR For That!

Date:

My first idea involves using AR technology to display public transportation information, preferably through the use of glasses or some eyewear medium. Many areas where people take public transportation at are very dangerous, as people looking to commit crimes know they will find static positioned victims waiting for their bus/trains. Instead of the current text-a-code system which most bus companies have implemented, I would propose a simple digital overlay of the physical world with AR glasses which can show an estimated time of your transportations arrival and where it currently is located. I think this type of AR technology can allow riders to stay safe and vigilant without constantly peering at their phones for updates. This scanner-like system would be awesome for riders and more functionalities and features could be added as time goes on!

Another potential use case for AR technology is in the educational space. Many students turn to YouTube and other internet content providers for guides and demos when stuck on subjects. The problem is that we often fall down the internet rabbit hole when we are suggested similar content and bombarded with ads. One harmless video that captures our attention can lead to a wasted hour surfing the internet. My idea to solve this is by allowing students to have AR technology also in the form of glasses or even built into their laptops which will give them clues and hints to how to solve the problem. This technology would also be able to give parse helpful resources and condense them without ads which can serve as huge distractors. I believe an AR interface for learning can help with reducing distractions and time spent surfing for information, by simply having all the necessary information students need stored in guides that the AR system would show at specific steps.

The next idea I had for AR use is within the fitness industry. Many people sign up for gym memberships each day without knowing exactly how to use the equipment properly. My idea would involve using 3D gifs within the AR space which explain the correct way to perform workouts and tips for maintaining proper form to reduce injury risk. Knowing proper form can make the difference between a gym injury and a successful workout. I envision this service being implemented in all gyms, from chains to smaller gyms. This would greatly help reduce turnover with gym membership in my opinion as less newcomers injure their selves trying out new machines and workouts for the first time.

The last idea I had was to prevent many mass shooting occurrences through the use of AR technology which would alert people of weapons nearby. Now this technology would have a hard time being implemented because some people carry weapons for self protection while others carry for nefarious purposes. Discerning between the two would be difficult, but I believe just knowing who is armed around you can better prepare people in areas where carrying weapons is prohibited. The use of AR for a scenario like this is sure to cause controversy, but I assure you that it could prevent a lot of crimes from occurring. Allow people to be armed and allow people to know who else is armed within their vicinity. This could even possibly deter many from violence as well as they know they are not the only person armed. Heavy regulation would be required for AR in this use case, but I ultimately believe it could bring some value to people in the world.
