Xilinx Continues Momentum in Auto with BYD Design Win in China

Date:

Continuing the impressive momentum Xilinx has made in automotive in 2018—including last week’s announcement with Daimler—today we are extremely proud to announce a new design win in China with BYD, the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicles and batteries and a global leader in battery-electric buses with more than 45,000 buses in service across 300 cities, 50 countries and six continents. BYD is the first OEM in China to begin mass production of its front-camera advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technology using the Xilinx Zynq SoCs, which will be going into its newest-generation commercial and passenger cars.

Xilinx has a strong pedigree in automotive and has been selling chips to automakers and Tier 1 automotive suppliers for over 12 years. More than 160 million Xilinx devices are in automotive systems today, and approximately 55 million of these are used for ADAS alone. In the majority of recent deployments, Xilinx devices are being used by Tier 1s to provide processing power for the camera and sensor systems they are developing for ADAS and autonomous vehicles.

The Xilinx Zynq devices are making possible a variety of cutting-edge capabilities in BYD vehicles, including lane-departure warning, pedestrian detection and forward-collision warning. These systems set BYD cars apart from others in their class while providing drivers and passengers with a higher level of safety.

And that’s not all: Xilinx technology is credited with breaking performance, energy and price records, too! Significantly, Xilinx ADAS solutions are delivering to BYD top performance and reduced power consumption at a lower cost than competitive options. According to BYD data, the company has been able to slash the overall costs of its ADAS features by more than 60 percent by using Xilinx chips.

“We’ve been working with BYD for over three years on this project, and are thrilled to hit this milestone,” said Willard Tu, Xilinx’s senior director for automotive. “We have collaborated closely with BYD’s local team in China to design specialized systems that would meet their unique criteria.”

We’ll have more to share on the automotive front from CES 2019 and Automotive World Japan. Stay tuned!
