Virtual Reality vs Augmented Reality vs Mixed Reality

Date:

Payoda Technology Inc

Virtual Reality:

Virtual reality brings in an artificial built environment in front of the user and makes him feel as if it is real. Influenced by sound and vision, this has already reached the nooks and corners of the world. Virtual Reality simulates a real environment to feel and enjoy real-world benefits.

VR has stepped into industries like healthcare, automobile, gaming, movies. Gaining knowledge through VR is at a much faster pace than traditional class-room based reading and interaction, thereby improving educational value.

Augmented Reality:

Augmented Reality is engaging physical objects into the artificial world. It makes users aware and helps them interact with the real-world and virtual world in real-time. Unlike VR which is totally artificial, Augmented Reality uses the available environment and overlays the digital part on top of it.

GPS and its compass are sufficient for AR applications in smartphones. However, advanced AR applications might need machine vision, object recognition and gesture recognition.

The market size of AR and VR is forecasted to be around $210 billion in 2022 from $6 billion in 2016, which is going to be a giant leap in the software industry. [Source: IDC].

Since it involves the Collection and Analysis of large sets of data, Privacy and Security could be a serious concern similar to Big Data.

Essential infrastructure for MR includes high performing sensors, cameras, infrared detectors, gaze trackers, accelerometers and microphones.

Mixed Reality:

Mixed Reality is the blend of the real and virtual worlds that advances the interaction between humans, computer, and the environment. Things that were restricted to our imaginations before are made possible now with this technology.

Interaction between humans and computers has been improved a lot over the years. Now, evolution and advancements in sensors paved a way for environmental interaction with computers. Environmental input includes human position, boundaries, lighting, sound, and location.

As we move closer to the digital world, we experience VR and as we move closer to the physical world, we experience AR. When VR and AR come closer to each other, we see MR. The endpoints between these two worlds brought forth Virtuality Continuum commonly referred to as a mixed reality spectrum.

Devices in need:

There are two devices that we need — Holographic devices and Immersive devices.

Holographic devices place the digital entity in the real-world while Immersive devices block out physical entities.
