Village further refines marijuana proposal

Date:

Constantine Village Council on Monday continued to review details for a proposed adult-use marijuana ordinance.

Village manager Mark Honeysett said he expects additional discussions of the proposal.

Deadline to submit ballot details to the county clerk is Aug. 11. Honeysett would like to have it prepared shortly after the next council meeting on July 20.

At a May 18 meeting, the council decided by a 6-1 vote to put the proposal of recreational marijuana on the November ballot.

The new ordinance states tor the first two years after the date of adoption, only businesses that currently have medical marijuana permits from the village are eligible for recreational permits. There is a $5,000 annual fee for each permit.

About two years ago, the council approved 11 licenses. Among those initial holders of medical marijuana, only seven remain active, Honeysett said.

The council decided Monday to allow the seven active businesses the option of selling recreational marijuana, and approved two microbusinesses. Unlimited transporters are allowed.
