Tin instead of lead for stable lasers – Nature Nanotechnology

Date:

Additionally, reducing the thickness of halide perovskites can enhance the binding energy of excitons, resulting in strong amplification of light emission, even at high temperatures. In particular, 2D halide perovskite-based lasers show improved luminescence efficiency, enhanced stability and, thanks to their layered nature, a wide range of chemical versatility. A pioneering work (Y. Liang et al. Adv. Mater. 31, 1903030; 2019) reported multicolour lasing from mechanically exfoliated 2D Pb halide perovskite. Now, Yahui Li et al. (Sci. Adv. 9, eadh0517; 2023) further exemplify this versatility, reporting 2D Sn halide perovskites, for a greener alternative to Pb. In this work, the researchers synthesize a series of highly phase-pure 2D Sn perovskite bulk crystals and achieve room-temperature lasing without external cavities in the exfoliated flakes.
