Thymesia: How To Defeat Varg

Date:

Thymesia is an action RPG set in a Gothic world struck by a terrible plague. The levels in Thymesia are memories of Corvus that needs to be experienced to be remembered. Varg first shows up as the boss in the tutorial you are supposed to lose to begin the game. Later in the game, you will rematch with Varg which is a long time coming. Because Varg’s moveset is the same in each fight this guide applies to the tutorial fight aside from a few strategies available.

Varg’s fight is a dance that requires dodges or parrying of his telegraphed attacks to keep pace and keep aggression to match his own. Parrying or attacking with the saber are all ways to Wound him and Claw attacks or fast plague knife pokes can all keep whittling away at his green health without breaking aggression. Varg’s attacks are highly telegraphed which can make them easy to dodge but they deal tons of damage to make up for it. He has two phases gaining slightly faster attacks in the second phase.

How To Get To Varg

Varg is the boss of Herme’s Fortress. His fight is an excellent top off to the area and its winding staircases and locked doors. Varg makes his first appearance as the giant knight who gives you the smackdown that starts the plot of the game but his first phase can be beaten in the tutorial for an achievement.

Varg’s Moveset

Varg’s moveset hits hard but is slow and fairly telegraphed compared to other bosses leaving ample time in between strikes to go for damage. Varg has a pool of moves that he can use in any order to form a combo of anywhere between one and three attacks. He frequently does a two-attack combo but can sometimes do one or three instead.

  • Two-hit combo where Varg sweeps in front of him
  • A dash to the side or backward followed up by a jump attack
  • Double overhand strike
  • Phase two starts with a red grab attack
  • Sword slam, sweep attack
  • Front sweep, upward slice
  • Heavy horizontal slash. This move is often the follow-up to the sweep but sometimes can be thrown out on its own

Tips

  • Learn his parry timings and use a minimum level four Knife Plague Weapon. At level four the knife unlocks the ability drastically shorten its cast time if used right after a parry. This is highly effective against Varg since his attacks are spaced out enough that you can sneak a knife stab in after parrying each attack in any of his chains. The knife takes out large chunks of green health per stab, which helps deal lots of damage to Varg fast so long as you parry every attack.
  • All his attacks hit hard so parrying/dodging is essential to not getting smacked away and losing tons of health and pressure.
  • Because his attacks are slow and hard-hitting they are easier to dodge as they are slower
  • Varg always does one or two attacks in a combo so parrying at least one of them helps chew through white health allowing for claw attack followups to keep pressure
  • Despite his armor, Varg can quickly be poked down with constant parry pressure. His attacks are slow but knock you away if you get hit which can give him time to heal
  • The jump attack leaves Varg open to attacks for a while. Take advantage of the opening
