Jyotiraditya Scindia, India’s civil aviation minister, emphasised the significance of the aviation industry to the Indian economy on Wednesday, saying the government has set a goal of building 220 new airports by 2025. Scindia made the remark while replying to requests for funding from the civil aviation ministry for the fiscal year 2022-23 in the Lok Sabha. During the Covid-19 epidemic, India made progress in both local and international travel, according to Scindia. “Cargo flights for perishable food items will be increased to 30% with 133 new flights in the coming years,” Scindia was reported as saying by news agency ANI. The aviation minister also stated that advanced technologies will be used to ease the process of granting pilot licences. He went on to say that the government plans to build 33 new domestic freight ports, 15 new pilot training schools, more employment, and a stronger focus on the drone industry. “With this, the Government has set a target of creating 220 new airports by 2025,” he stated. He lauded the country’s high number of female pilots, saying, “In all other countries, only five per cent of the pilots are female. In India, over 15% of pilots are female. This is another example of women empowerment. There have been a lot of changes in the aviation industry in the last 20-25 years.” “Earlier only big cities had airports. Today that has changed completely. This is the reason why the civil aviation industry has become a key element of India’s economy. The amount of employment generated in the industry is massive,” he stated. The minister told the House that 3.82 lakh people per day flew in the previous seven days. The ministry plans to raise passenger throughput from 34.5 million in 2018-19 to 40 million in 2023-24, he told the House.
