A third live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie has gotten the nod, despite the second film still being a couple of months away. Paramount is betting big on the Blue Blur, also announcing plans for a live-action spin-off series which will air on streaming platform Paramount+. According to a press release, Idris Elba is already on board to reprise his role as Knuckles in that.
“We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed,” SEGA boss Haruki Satomi said. “We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them. 2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday.”
The second Sonic the Hedgehog movie isn’t out until April 8, but we already got confirmation that more is on the way. A reported by Deadline, Sega and Paramount are continuing the collaboration with both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie and a spin-off series starring Knuckles. And yes, Idris Elba, who is voicing the gem-loving echidna in the second film, is on board for the show.
From the sound of things, we’re going to see the Knuckles in action before the third movie. The series is set to premiere on Paramount+ in 2023. Details are sparse, but it could be a prequel revealing Knuckles’ background and how he stumbled upon the conniving Dr. Robotnik. Knuckles’ story has always been an oddly bitter one considering the family-friendly nature of the franchise. But because of this, it’s ripe for elaboration. The show may also fill the gaps between the second and third movies. We don’t know yet, but at least Sega seems pleased.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has a new trailer with loads of details that eagle-eyed Sonic fans should take notice of. The trailer comes just ahead of the Super Bowl and manages to cram quite a bit of information in just over 40 seconds. And just like the trailer that was shown off at The Game Awards, there’s a lot to talk about.
Judging from the trailer, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looks to be taking a lot more from the games than the first film did. From the inclusion of classic characters like Tails and Knuckles, to set pieces taken straight from a few of the games, this is sure to be good news for Sonic fans.
That trailer sure was speedy
The first big thing to notice in the trailer is the chase between Sonic and Knuckles as they snowboard down a mountain. Immediately, this is reminiscent of a similar scene from Sonic Adventure, where Sonic also snowboards down a gigantic mountain. Of course, then, Sonic was being chased by a massive avalanche and not an angry echidna. The question...
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was arguably one of the biggest surprises of recent times, as it was actually a thoroughly entertaining watch. The sequel, then, is ratcheting things up: adding Idris Elba’s Knuckles to the cast, and generally pulling out all of the stops when it comes to special effects. This new Super Bowl spot even includes the Death Egg Robot, which is surely going to be a memorable set-piece in the final film.
It’s looking like a big year for flicks based on video game franchises, with Uncharted out today and Super Mario later in the year. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will hit theatres on 1st April in the UK and 8th April in the United States, and we never thought we’d say that we genuinely can’t wait.
