Final Fantasy 14 Goes Back On Sale From January 25

Final Fantasy XIV will go back on sale on January 25, after it was previously removed from digital store shelves due to a massive influx of players for the new Endwalker expansion.

Publisher Square Enix was forced to remove the base game and its complete edition from sale in December 2021, as the servers began buckling under the pressure of the game simply being too popular.

Players were compensated with 14 days of free play time to make up for the congestion and long queue times, but director Naoki Yoshida explained that a new lockdown on the game servers may be enforced if server stability is threatened again.

Global server capacity is being expanded, with an Oceanian data center opening on January 25, while North American and European data centers will be expanded across multiple phases. This will take time though, as Yoshida explained that the global semiconductor shortage made procuring more server equipment challenging. Currently, Square Enix's plan will see a new data center in Japan opened in July 2022, Europe's expansion will start in July as well, and a two-phase expansion for American regions will commence from August 2022.

"Once again, I wish to apologize for the delays to server expansion caused by the global semiconductor shortage. The necessity for communities to separate due to the regrouping of Worlds is another inconvenience that may prove unavoidable for some players, and we ask for your understanding as we work to alleviate this issue," Yoshida said.

"Despite these hardships, however, we believe this server expansion is a significant step forward in providing players the best gaming experience possible in FFXIV. Work on bolstering the servers will continue well into 2023, expending a vast amount of financial resources and manpower, but we will do our utmost to ensure this endeavor has no negative impact on your ability to play, so we would appreciate your support while you continue on your adventures."

As for the future of Final Fantasy XIV, Yoshida said that more details on future content will be released at the end of February.

Final Fantasy XIV's Endwalker expansion has received high praise from anyone who has been able to access it, with Jenny Zheng writing that the new content is a "fitting, emotional conclusion to a years-long journey for us adventurers," in her Endwalker review.

Wikipedia Editors Voted Against Classifying NFTs as Art

Wikipedia Editors Voted Against Classifying NFTs as Art

A group of Wikipedia editors has voted against categorizing non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as a form of art-at least for now. A debate started on the platform last month on ‘the most expensive art sales by living artists’ and whether NFT art sales should be deemed as ‘art sales’ or ‘NFT sales.’ The discussion involved whether an NFT represented the art or was just a token that was separate from the underlying art. “Wikipedia really can’t be in the business of deciding what counts as art or not, which is why putting NFTs, art or not, in their own list makes things a lot simpler. NFTs have their own list, which should be linked in the article, and entries generally shouldn’t be listed in both,” editor “jonas” wrote. Out of the six editors, five voted against classifying NFTs as art. For the time being, the discussion has been shelved until a later date. Since anybody can write on Wikipedia, perhaps members of the NFT community could contribute to the classification debate. According to Wikipedia’s guidelines, neither unanimity nor a vote is required to form a consensus. Instead, the group must confirm that the participating editor’s legitimate concerns fall within the platform’s policies. Meanwhile, the lone editor who voted otherwise pointed out that even large publications, including the New York Times, had referred to Beeple as the ‘third-highest selling artist alive’ following his record-breaking NFT sale. In fact, Griffin Cock Foster, the co-founder of NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway took to Twitter to say: “Wikipedia is a global source of truth. Having NFTs categorized as ‘not art’ would be a disaster!” 🚨 Art Emergency!! 🚨 There is a debate happening rn on @Wikipedia that has the potential to * officially categorize NFTs as ‘not art’ on all of Wikipedia. * Wikipedia is a global source of truth. Having NFTs categorized as ‘not art’ would be a disaster! 🧵: — Duncan Cock Foster (@DCCockFoster) January 12, 2022 Responding to Griffin, Everipedia, a decentralized equivalent of Wikipedia stated that it’s time to move towards decentralized alternatives which supports art and innovation: “Everipedia editors have created over 100 pages on #NFT collections while Wikipedia is moving to mark NFTs as ‘not art’ across their platform. It’s time for NFT projects to move to Everipedia $IQ, a Web 3.0 encyclopedia which supports art and innovation.” Everipedia editors have created over 100 pages on #NFT collections while Wikipedia is moving to mark NFTs as "not art" across their platform. Troy Baker Announces NFT Project For His Voice

Veteran and prolific voice actor Troy Baker--known for his roles in The Last of Us, Fortnite, Death Stranding, and many more--is getting involved with NFTs. Baker announced on Twitter that he is partnering with Voiceverse NFT to think about what might be possible in the emerging market.

"I'm partnering with Voiceverse NFT to explore ways where together we might bring new tools to new creators to make new things, and allow everyone a chance to own and invest in the IPs they create. We all have a story to tell," Baker said.

Baker also seemingly had a message for those who don't believe in NFTs. "You can hate. Or you can create. What'll it be?" he wrote. Baker shared an cartoon image of himself with the tweet, leading some to believe an NFT version of Baker's likeness was on the way, but this is not the case.

Voiceverse also this week announced a partnership with comedian and streamer Andy Milonakis.

Voiceverse says its voice-based NFTs are different from owning jpegs. "Voice NFTs provide intrinsic utility in addition to a fantastic community. You can't right click either of these," the company explained.

"Imagine being able to create customized audiobooks, Youtube videos, e-learning lectures, or even podcasts with your favorite voice! All without the hassle of additional legal work. This also allows people with limited resources to access professional-grade voices more easily," the company said. "Voice NFTs provide a new way for you to communicate and build up your persona in metaverse worlds. You can look like anyone you want in the metaverse, and now you can sound like the Voice NFT you own."

"Imagine being able to talk in the voice of the character you are playing as in a multiplayer game! Imagine the next level of immersive experience!" the company added. "We understand the environmental impacts of NFTs. We are working hard to move our Voice NFTs to a much more environmentally friendly mainnet in the future such as Polygon or Solana. Proof of Work→ Proof of Stake."

For creators, Voiceverse said the original voice actor will receive royalty payments, and if the value of the NFT rise, the voice actor will see a bump as well. "We aren't saying Voice NFT is the perfect-child in the family of NFTs. We admit some of the short-comings, but we ask that you give it a chance without shunning it from the get-go, and look into what value and utility it can provide to the creator and gamer communities," Voiceverse said.
