Southeast Aviation suspends operations after tragic crash

Date:

Southeast Aviation (Ketchikan) has suspended all flight operations for the foreseeable future after a tragic accident on August 5, 2021.

Six people died when a de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver crashed into the side of a mountain near Ketchikan, Alaska.

The crash occurred at about 1,400-feet in steep terrain of the Misty Fjords National Monument (below) in low clouds.

The five passengers were from Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship which stopped at Ketchikan.

The airline issued this statement:

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends, family, first responders, and the community of Ketchikan for the tremendous outpouring of support and assistance we have received over the past number of days.

We are thinking of and grieving with the families of the five passengers and our dear friend and pilot lost in Thursday’s tragic flight incident. We are cooperating with the first responders and agencies involved, including the U.S. Coast Guard, National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration and Alaska State Troopers. All of us share in the anguish of this tragic incident, and our prayers go out to all affected.
