‘SNL’ alum Jay Pharoah says police pulled guns on him mid-workout, knelt on his neck

Former “Saturday Night Live” star Jay Pharoah is opening up about his own experience with police this year, in which he says officers drew guns on him and knelt on his neck.

The comedian described the encounter in an Instagram video posted Friday, sharing footage that he says captures the incident.

Pharoah says the encounter happened in Los Angeles a week before footage surfaced showing the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was chased down and shot while jogging in Georgia in February.

“I was exercising,” he said. “As I’m walking across the street … I see an officer to the left of me. I’m not thinking anything of it, because I’m a law-abiding citizen.”

"Saturday Night Live" alum Jay Pharoah says police pulled guns on him and knelt on his neck while he was exercising in Los Angeles this year.

Pharoah added he was also wearing noise cancelling headphones when the officers approached him.

“I look to my left,” Pharoah continued. “I see the officer. I see him coming with guns blazing. I see him say, ‘Get on the ground. Put your hands up like you’re an airplane.’ As he’s looking at me, I’m thinking that he’s making a mistake.”

Pharoah said the officers put him in handcuffs. While he was on the ground, he said, an officer “took his knee” and “put it on my neck.”

A time stamp in the top left corner of the video Pharoah shared indicates the footage was captured on April 26.

“It wasn’t as long as George Floyd, but I know how that feels,” Pharoah continued. “I said, ‘Why are you doing this? What’s wrong?’ They said, ‘You fit the description of a Black man in this area, with gray sweatpants on and a gray shirt.’ I told them, ‘If you Google right now Jay Pharoah, you will see that you made a big mistake.’ “

Pharoah said he was released after the cops received a call confirming he was not the person they were looking for.

“Get these f’ing cuffs off of me,” Pharoah said he told the officers.

In the video, he continues, saying, “I have never been in cuffs before up until that point. I’m a law-abiding citizen. I’m from the ‘burbs, you know? Luckily my parents, what they did was they tried to shelter me and my sister for years. So we never saw that. I didn’t experience first-hand racism in America until this year.”

Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Drake Madison told USA TODAY that the department is looking into the incident as well as the footage provided in Pharoah’s video. He added that LAPD has provided Pharoah with a document to file a misconduct complaint.

In his video, Pharoah added that “Black lives always matter” and that he “could have easily been an Ahmaud Arbery or a George Floyd.”

“Educate yourselves,” he continued. “Understand what the cops are saying to you, so if they try to flip anything on you, on young Black men, on Black men in general, we have the knowledge and we have the power to overthrow that because we’re well-rounded. We know what’s going on.”

Pharoah’s video ends with a recreated shot of him on the ground with a knee on his neck as he speaks directly to the camera: “I literally could have been George Floyd. We as a country can’t breathe anymore, and we are tired. We are sick, and we are tired of it. I can’t breathe.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Pharoah’s reps for further comment.

Steering Societies Beyond GDP to the SDGs

With Hazel Henderson and Claudine Schneider

October 22, 2020

1:15 pm to 2:15 pm EDT

The next webinar in the SSF series, with ecological economist and futurist Hazel Henderson, will address how the UN SDGs can and should replace GDP as the basis for valuing society leading to an economy based on planet protection and human wellbeing. Claudine Schneider is Hazel’s guest.

GDP accounts for all the public expenditures as “debt” while ignoring the value of the assets they created. If GDP were to be corrected by including the missing asset account, these debt-to-GDP ratios would be cut by up to 50% — with a few keystrokes! Learn why money isn’t what you think it is and why that matters to life on Earth in the next two webinars with Hazel and guests.

Claudine Schneider is a former Republican U.S. representative from Rhode Island. She was the first, and to date only, woman elected to Congress from Rhode Island. She is founder of Republicans for Integrity, which describes itself as a network of “Republican former Members of Congress who feel compelled to remind Republican voters about the fundamentals of our party and to provide the facts about incumbents’ voting records.”

Online shopping has become the norm for most people in 2020, even coaxing traditional retail brands to up their presence to stay competitive. Enter Syte, an Israel-based company that touts creating the world’s first product discovery platform that utilizes the senses, such as visual, text and voice, and then leverages visual artificial intelligence and next-generation personalization to create individualized and memorable customer experiences, Syte co-founder and CEO Ofer Fryman told Crunchbase News.

To execute on this, the company raised $30 million in Series C funding and an additional $10 million in debt. Viola Ventures led the round and was joined by LG Technology Ventures, La Maison, MizMaa Ventures and Kreos Capital, as well as existing investors Magma, Naver Corporation, Commerce Ventures, Storm Ventures, Axess Ventures, Remagine Media Ventures and KDS Media Fund.

This brings the company’s total fundraising to $71 million since its inception in 2015. That includes a $21.5 million Series B, also led by Viola, in 2019, according to Crunchbase data.

Fryman intends for the new funding to be put to work on product enhancements and geographic expansion. Syte already has an established customer base in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and will now focus expansion in the U.S. and Asia-Pacific.

Meanwhile, Syte has grown 22 percent quarter over quarter, as well as experienced a 38 percent expansion of its customer base since the beginning of 2020.

“Since we crossed $1 million annual recurring revenue, we have been tripling revenue while also becoming more efficient,” Fryman said. “We can accelerate growth as well as build an amazing technology and solution for a business that needs it right now. We plan to grow further, and even though our SaaS metrics are excellent right now, our goal is to improve them.”

Anshul Agarwal, managing director at LG Technology Ventures, said Syte was an attractive investment due in part to its unique technology.

“They have a deep-learning system and have created a new category, product discovery that will enable online shopping in a way we never had the ability to do before,” Agarwal said. “The product market fit was also unique. We believe in the strong execution by the team and the rapid growth in SaaS. We looked at many different companies, and the SaaS metrics that Syte showed are the strongest we’ve seen in a while.”
