Roku’s Streambar is not only a solid choice to upgrade your TV’s sound, it gives you a Bluetooth speaker and 4K HDR streaming tool at the same time. Now, you can pick one up at the Home Shopping Network (HSN) for $100, a considerable $30 discount and one of the best prices we’ve seen yet.

Buy Roku Streambar at HSN – $100

The Streambar scored a solid 86 in our review, thanks to the pleasing, smallish design, good sound quality and relatively easy TV setup with the necessary HDMI cable included. Just doing that will give your older TV an immediate sound upgrade, with Dolby Audio included, in all of about five minutes.

It offers a lot more than that, though. Powered by the Roku OS, it supports 4K HDR streaming and delivers snappy performance. You get apps like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, YouTube TV and Roku’s own channel, along with the ability to search search by show, topic and more. On top of all that, you can use the Streambar as a Bluetooth speaker, so you won’t need an Alexa or other speaker in the room.

The downsides are a lack of Dolby Vision HDR support, bass that’s a bit weak and no ethernet port if you prefer a hard connection. Considering that it can function a speaker, streaming key and Bluetooth speaker, however, it’s an excellent buy at $100.

‘Fall Guys’ cross-play features arrive tomorrow

Avatar

Mediatonic is set to release a mid-season Fall Guys patch on May 13th, which will bring some cross-play features to the hit game. Custom lobbies will be open to everyone, so you can host private games between as few as four players. PC and PlayStation 4 players will all be able to join. Players on both platforms can be matched together in regular matches (or shows) as well.

The cross-play functions aren’t completely ready, unfortunately. You can’t group up with friends across platforms just yet. Still, cross-platform matchmaking and custom lobbies are important steps towards letting everyone play together however they like. Mediatonic recently delayed the Xbox and Nintendo Switch versions of Fall Guys from this summer to make sure it can add cross-play and other features.

The season 4.5 update is called “Dave.” Just Dave. It will add two new rounds (or levels): The Slimescraper, a follow-up to Slime Climb, and Button Bashers, where players face off in duels with the best ones advancing. There will be 55 more variants spread to shake things up across 12 stages.

Mediatonic says it has improved latency when you’re grabbing objects or mantling up ledges, and you’ll be able to see your connection quality with an in-game indicator. There’s a new way to report possible cheaters as well as some bug fixes.

Sonos Arc update adds Dolby Atmos height channel volume adjustment

Avatar

Published

If you spent the $799 a Sonos Arc costs, chances are you love to tweak your sound setup to get the most out of it. And now Sonos is allowing you to do precisely that. With the latest update to its mobile app, the company has added a Dolby Atmos height volume adjustment option for Arc speakers.

The setting allows you to decide how prominently you want to hear the overhead channel in a Dolby Atmos mix. You can tone it down if you find it overpowering or increase it if you want the height channel to stand out. Previously, that adjustment was something the company’s Trueplay feature automatically tweaked for you when you first set up the Arc in your living space. To access the new option, tap the cog icon in the Sonos mobile app and then “System,” followed by “Arc” and “Height Audio.”

Today’s update also has something in store for Roam owners. Since Sonos released its latest portable speaker last month, battery life with Google Assistant voice control turned on hasn’t been great. In our review of the Roam, we found it was possible to drain the battery to zero overnight if you left Assistant enabled. Following today’s update, Sonos says Roam owners should now get the most out of the speaker’s battery when using Google voice control.

You can get both updates by downloading the latest version of the Sonos app to your phone.

Facebook is under new scrutiny for its moderation practices in Europe

Avatar

Published

on

Facebook is once again facing questions about its treatment of content moderators after a moderator told an Irish parliamentary committee that the company doesn’t do enough to protect the workers who sift through violent and disturbing content on the platform.

Isabella Plunkett, who currently works for Covalen, a Irish outsourcing company that hires content moderators to work as contract staff, told the committee that non-employee moderators aren’t given adequate access to mental health resources. For example, Covalen allows for an hour and a half of “wellness time” each week, bu the company-provided “wellness coaches” are not mental health professionals, and are not equipped to help moderators process the traumatic content they often deal with. Plunkett told the committee that these wellness coaches sometimes suggested activities like painting or karaoke.

“The content is awful, it would affect anyone,” she said at a press conference following the hearing. “No one can be okay watching graphic violence seven to eight hours a day.” She said moderators should be afforded the same benefits and protections as actual Facebook employees, including paid sick time and the ability to work from home. Plunkett also raised Facebook’s reliance on non-disclosure agreements, which she said contributed to a “climate of fear” that makes moderators afraid to speak out or seek outside help.

In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson said the company is “committed to working with our partners to provide support” to people reviewing content. “Everyone who reviews content for Facebook goes through an in-depth training programme on our Community Standards and has access to psychological support to ensure their wellbeing,” the spokesperson said. “In Ireland, this includes 24/7 on-site support with trained practitioners, an on-call service, and access to private healthcare from the first day of employment. We are also employing technical solutions to limit their exposure to potentially graphic material as much as possible. This is an important issue, and we are committed to getting this right.”

This is far from the first time these issues have been raised. The workplace conditions of content moderators, who spend their days wading through the worst content on the platform, has long been an issue for Facebook, which depends on non-employee moderators around the world. The company last year agreed to a $52 million settlement with U.S.-based moderators who said their jobs resulted in PTSD and other mental health issues.

As part of the settlement, Facebook agreed to make several changes to the way it handles content that’s funneled to moderators for review. It introduced new tools that would allow them to view videos in black and white and with audio muted in an effort to make the often violent and graphic content less disturbing to watch. It also added features to make it easier to skip to the relevant parts of longer videos to reduce the amount of overall time spent watching the content. The company has also made significant investments in AI technology, with the hopes of one day automating more of its moderation work.

But Facebook may soon have to answer questions on whether these measures go far enough to protect content moderators. The committee is expected to ask representatives from Facebook, and its contracting companies, to appear at another hearing to face questions about their treatment of workers.

New York jet fuel gets pricier as Colonial Pipeline outage continues

American Airlines planes at LaGuardia Airport

Leslie Josephs | CNBC

Jet fuel is getting pricier nationwide, especially in the New York City area, as the Colonial Pipeline outage continues.

The premium on jet fuel prices in New York Harbor was nearly $1.87 a gallon on Tuesday, close to 9 cents more than the U.S. Gulf Coast price, the largest premium since February 2020 and almost 40% more than a week ago, according to S&P Global Platts.

Several airlines, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways, said their operations haven’t been affected. Two airlines, however, have made adjustments. American Airlines added temporary refueling stops this week until Thursday to two long-haul flights out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Southwest Airlines is flying planes with extra fuel into Nashville International Airport and others, a measure known as tankering that carriers turn to during times of supply shortages, such as after hurricanes.

Airlines and airports this week said they were looking at alternative methods of obtaining fuel beyond the Colonial Pipeline, the country’s largest refined fuel products pipeline. The company shut down all pipeline operations after it was hit by a cybersecurity attack involving ransomware on Friday.

“Since notification of the pipeline’s temporary shutdown, BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport has worked with airline partners and fueling companies to put alternate fueling measures in place,” a spokesman for the Baltimore airport told CNBC. “We continue to monitor the situation, and will adjust plans as needed until the pipeline is back online.”

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the major airports serving the New York City area, said it is “not experiencing any immediate impacts from the Colonial Pipeline shutdown.”

“We are continuing to closely monitor the situation and remain in regular contact with gasoline and diesel fuel suppliers for the Port Authority vehicle fleet and with the airlines and other airport stakeholders about jet fuel supply,” a spokeswoman said.

Jet fuel for the Gulf Coast, an industry benchmark, on Tuesday hit $1.78 a gallon, the highest since January 2020. Prices have climbed by 33% this year as more customers return to air travel. The higher prices for fuel, generally airlines’ largest cost after labor, comes just as more customers are expected to fly during the peak summer travel months.
