Release of the TIMSS 2019 U.S. Public- and Restricted-use Data Files and U.S. Technical Report and User’s Guide

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) releases U.S. public-use and restricted-use datasets from the 2019 administration of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), along with the U.S. TIMSS 2019 Technical Report and User’s Guide, written to provide an overview of the design and implementation of TIMSS 2019 in the United States.  To learn more about the TIMSS 2019 U.S. restricted-use dataset (NCES 2022048), public-use dataset (NCES 2022047), and the U.S. TIMSS 2019 Technical Report and User’s Guide (NCES 2022049), please visit https://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2022049.

The restricted-use dataset requires a restricted-use license to access.  To learn about the licensing process, please visit https://nces.ed.gov/statprog/instruct.asp.

TIMSS provides reliable and timely trend data on the mathematics and science achievement of U.S. students compared to that of students in other countries. TIMSS data have been collected from students at grades 4 and 8 every 4 years since 1995, with the United States participating in every administration. TIMSS is sponsored by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and conducted in the United States by the NCES.

The Institute of Education Sciences, a part of the U.S. Department of Education, is the nation’s leading source for rigorous, independent education research, evaluation, statistics, and assessment.
