Real-life ‘Disaster Girl’ turns her meme into a $500,000 NFT

The “Disaster Girl” photo that sparked a thousand memes is the latest to make it big all over again as an NFT. Zoe Roth, a 21-year-old college student and face of the viral “Disaster Girl,” sold an NFT of the meme for roughly $500,000 worth of Ether, The New York Times reported. The auction took place earlier this month, on auction site Foundation. Roth plans to use the funds to pay for school and make donations to charity, she told The Times.

The now iconic image dates back to 2005, when her father, David Roth, snapped the photo in their neighborhood while watching local firefighters at a controlled burn. Eventually, he entered it into a contest (he won), and the photo was quickly picked up by internet forums, according to Know Your Meme.

It’s not the first time an old meme has found a new life as an NFT or non-fungible token. The artist behind Nyan Cat sold an NFT based on the viral 2011 clip for $605,000 earlier this year. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also recently sold his first tweet as an NFT for nearly $3 million.

Clubhouse will make its Android app available worldwide in a week

Clubhouse’s fledgling Android app will soon be much easier to find. TechCrunch reports that Clubhouse will make the Android version of its drop-in voice chat app available worldwide within a week. It’ll reach Brazil, Japan and Russia on May 18th, with India and Nigeria getting their first look three days later. Everyone around the world will have access by the afternoon of May 21st.

The startup started beta testing its Android app in the US on May 9th, just a few months after beginning development. The iPhone release has been available since March 2020.

There’s a strong incentive for Clubhouse to expand quickly, even if its Android app is still in testing. Facebook, Twitter and other internet giants are rolling out Clubhouse-like features in a bid to cut the app’s momentum and keep users on their social platforms. This could keep new users joining Clubhouse where they’d otherwise be tempted to stick to incumbent social networks.

Tesla’s Model S Plaid may pack a retractable spoiler

It’s no secret that Tesla’s Model S Plaid should be fast, but there are now hints that Tesla might tweak the design to handle that added performance. As Electrek has learned, The Kilowatts have spotted a Model S prototype (most likely the Plaid or Plaid+) with a retractable spoiler built into the trunk. The concept of an extending wing isn’t new for sports cars, but this is an electric luxury sedan — it must be fast if the weight of the car isn’t enough to keep it firmly planted.

Tesla has made ambitious performance claims for its tri-motor Model S variants. The ‘standard’ Plaid model is expected to reach a 200MPH top speed, accelerate to 60MPH in just under two seconds, and can reportedly complete a quarter mile in slightly over 9.2 seconds. The Plaid+ should be be even faster off the line.

There’s no certainty either of the finished Plaid models will reach drivers with retractable spoilers built-in. A lot could happen between now and the base Plaid’s late summer launch, let alone the mid-2022 debut of the Plaid+ variant. However, the test vehicle suggests that Tesla is determined to claim a performance advantage over rivals, and it’s not leaning solely on the new Roadster to make that happen.

AT&T and Discovery may combine content to take on Disney+ and Netflix

AT&T and Discovery are normally foes in the media world, but they might soon forge an alliance to stand a better chance in streaming. Bloomberg sources claim the two companies are in talks to “combine content assets” and give themselves a better chance at competing with the likes of Disney+ and Netflix. The terms aren’t available and might change, but it’d be an unusual shift for AT&T after spending years building up a monolithic content library through WarnerMedia.

There’s no certainty the talks will lead to a deal, according to the tipsters. Both AT&T and Discovery have declined to comment.

A content union between AT&T and Discovery would be unusual, but could make sense given the streaming media landscape. Although HBO Max is growing faster than expected, it’s still eclipsed by incumbents like Netflix. Discovery content might give you a reason to tune in, at least if you’re a fan of cooking and reality shows.

Any mutual sharing would help Discovery, too. Its Discovery+ service is young and, by its nature, limited to a relatively small selection of shows. Access to some WarnerMedia programming could make a Discovery+ subscription more appealing, although it’s safe to say AT&T would limit what it offers to avoid undermining HBO Max.
