The Inside Quantum Technology conference in The Hague in April 2024 is poised to feature a keynote address by Ronald Hanson, a Distinguished Professor at Delft University of Technology and a principal investigator at QuTech. Hanson, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to quantum technology, is one of the founding professors of QuTech, an institute he helped establish in 2014. He served as its Scientific Director from 2016 to 2020.
As a principal investigator, Ronald Hanson’s research has been pivotal in advancing our understanding of quantum-entangled states, with a long-term vision of harnessing these states for future quantum technologies, such as quantum computing and quantum internet. This achievement was followed by another significant milestone in 2015 when he conducted the first loophole-free Bell test, ending a decades-long scientific quest. In 2018, his group achieved another critical breakthrough by generating quantum entanglement at a rate faster than its loss, paving the way for more robust quantum communication systems.
In his upcoming talk at the IQT conference, Hanson is expected to outline his ongoing efforts as a principal investigator to build the fundamentals of a future quantum internet. With plans to establish a rudimentary quantum network between several cities in the Netherlands, his work is at the forefront of quantum technology implementation.
Hanson’s contributions to the field have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Nicholas Kurti European Science Prize (2012), the Huibregtsen Award for Excellence in Science and Society (2016), and the John Stewart Bell Prize (2017). In 2019, he was honored with the Spinoza Prize, the highest scientific award in the Netherlands, acknowledging his significant impact on science and society.
As a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW), the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences (KNAW), and a Fellow of the American Physical Society, Hanson’s reputation as a leading scientist in quantum technology is well-established. His appointment as the university’s 6th Distinguished Professor in 2020 further cemented his status as a key figure in the field.
