QECDT Student Presents Talk at LGBT+ Researchers Conference

‌Alexandra Moylett, a student from the second cohort of the Quantum Engineering CDT, was one of nine researchers accepted to give a talk at the LGBT+ STEMinar, for her work on modelling photon distinguishability and loss in linear optics.

 

The LGBT+ STEMinar, organised by LGBT STEM and the IOP, celebrates the work of STEM researchers who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and any other gender or sexual minority. The day included opportunities to network, a poster session, keynote talks from Dr Izzy Jayasinghe and Professor Peter Coles, and a panel discussion on being LGBT+ in STEM chaired by Professor Polly Arnold FRS.

 

Alexandra gave a fifteen minute talk about her research into near-term quantum computers, speaking specifically about how photon distinguishability and loss can create issues in a linear optical device, and how these issues can be modelled in order to try and mitigate them. Her research was accompanied by talks on a wide variety of subjects, from the history of Vikings on Greenland, to telecommunications at 2μm wavelength, and even how machine learning is being used to map out galaxies.
