PSA and FCA merger finalised

Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, DS, Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lancia – these car companies are now all part of the same automotive conglomerate. In what’s quickly becoming the cornerstone of the industry’s second century, PSA and FCA have finalised the terms of their merger, in the process creating the third largest OEM by revenue, and fourth largest by volume.

Both PSA and FCA will share a 50 per cent stake in the group, with PSA chairman Carlos Tavares assuming the role as group CEO, and John Elkann, previous boss of FCA, serving as group chairman.

The merger will create a group with combined revenues of nearly £145billion, and total combined sales of 8.7 million units across the globe, covering all major market segments underpinned by FCA’s profitable US truck performance and PSA’s stronghold of the European B-segment hatchback class.

There is a simple reason that so many seemingly unrelated manufacturers are joining forces – it simply costs a huge amount of money to develop new models, especially as the industry on the whole moves towards electrification and autonomous driving. Increased production scale, a further diversification of both product and market share and purchasing leverage from suppliers all build resilience too.

What does this mean for future product synergies? We can only speculate, but the reforming of Fiat’s small car range including the 500 and Panda and their inevitable shift to electrification is on the cards, while a new investment into Maserati as the group’s flagship luxury brand should also come to fruition with PSA on board. It’s also worth remembering that Citroën has history with Maserati, previously owning the Italian manufacturer with mechanical tie-ups that led to the Citroën SM and Maserati Bora. Now wouldn’t a modern DS-badged GT with Maserati underpinnings be something to look forward to?

SpaceX on track to launch eight Falcon 9 rockets in six weeks

After yesterday’s successful Starlink-26 launch, SpaceX is now more than half of the way to completing eight orbital Falcon 9 launches in six weeks.

On April 23rd, after a one-day delay for bad weather, SpaceX launched four astronauts on a flight-proven Falcon 9 booster – and in a flight-proven Dragon capsule – in a historic spaceflight first. Six days later, the company aced its 24th operational Starlink launch, followed by two more 60-satellite Starlink missions on May 4th and May 9th – the latter of which marked the first time a single Falcon 9 booster completed ten orbital-class launches. Finally, Falcon 9 completed yet another Starlink launch on May 15th – this time carrying 52 flat-packed internet satellites and two third-party payloads as part of SpaceX’s fourth Starlink rideshare mission.

However, after launching 234 satellites, four astronauts, and five Falcon 9s – and recovering all five boosters – in 22 days, SpaceX is far from finished.

Some two weeks ago, the bulk of SpaceX’s June launch manifest had already more or less fallen into place with three specific dates in the first half of the month. A few days prior to Starlink-26’s successful launch, what is likely SpaceX’s fourth and final launch of May 2021 also came into focus.

Unsurprisingly another Starlink mission, Starlink-28 is now scheduled to launch no earlier than (NET) 2:59 pm EDT (18:59 UTC) on May 26th – 11 days after Starlink-26. Of note, SpaceX has chosen Falcon 9 booster B1063 to support the mission. That booster debuted in November 2020 at California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) and was transported to Florida two months ago. Starlink-28 will be its second launch.

Up next, SiriusXM’s 7-ton SXM-8 radio satellite arrived at SpaceX’s payload integration facilities in Florida earlier this month and is scheduled to launch as early as 12:25 am EDT (4:25 UTC) on June 1st. The mission could slip a few days but is still likely to launch in early June.

Less than three days later, a rare new Falcon 9 booster could launch SpaceX’s second upgraded Cargo Dragon spacecraft – also new – on NASA’s CRS-22 space station resupply mission. Earlier today, NASA confirmed that the mission is on track to launch on June 3rd – likely around 1pm EDT (15:00 UTC).

If the weather, space station, and SpaceX’s rockets, spacecraft, and pad facilities cooperate, the completion of those three upcoming missions would mark eight successful Falcon 9 launches – carrying two Dragon spacecraft, four astronauts, and almost 300 satellites to orbit – in less than six weeks (41 days). If SpaceX manages that feat and averages one launch every five days, the company will have completed ~45% of its 2021 launches in ~26% of the year to date – a clear pattern of acceleration.

In the same period, a SpaceX Crew Dragon also safely returned four astronauts to Earth after the longest crewed spaceflight in US history (May 2nd) and successfully launched and landed a full-size Starship prototype for the first time (May 5th).

Multiple Tesla Superchargers blocked in one fell swoop by creative pickup truck

Creativity and resourcefulness typically inspire admiration. It takes serious thought, after all, to come up with a solution when in a pinch. But creativity and resourcefulness can also go the opposite way, and when it does, facepalm-inducing incidents may happen. One such incident occurred at a PA Tesla Supercharger, which was visited by a rather resourceful pickup driver.

YouTube host and Model 3 owner @JeffTutorials was visiting a PA Supercharger when he came across a rather unusual sight. The Supercharger wasn’t crowded, yet, it was quite tricky for an EV owner to plug in to one of the station’s rapid-charging stalls. This was because multiple Superchargers were blocked entirely by a large pickup truck pulling a trailer.

(Credit: JeffTutorials/Twitter)

As could be seen in the YouTube host’s image, the pickup truck driver parked his vehicle and trailer across the Tesla Supercharger, resulting in numerous stalls being blocked off. The reasons behind such a unique parking style remain unknown, of course, but if the pickup driver was aiming to block some EV charging stations, he or she was certainly successful.

It takes some creativity to block multiple Superchargers with a big truck, after all, but blocking off even more charging stations with a trailer? That’s straight up resourcefulness in action.

Fortunately, the location did not seem very busy then, which meant that few if any EV owners were inconvenienced by the pickup truck driver’s creative ICE-ing. But if such a stunt were pulled during a busy day, with numerous Tesla drivers doing long trips, then things may not have ended with a simple joke on Twitter

What is rather amusing is that the pickup truck driver who ICE-ed several of the Tesla Superchargers was actually driving a company vehicle. And amusingly enough, a look at the logo on the pickup truck shows that the vehicle is from a company that offers “gas and oil services.” That’s downright symbolic and almost representative of the ongoing transition to sustainability in the transportation sector today, as well as the continued resistance from those that remain dedicated to the internal combustion engine and fossil fuels.

Cars & Coffee group keeps Tesla Supercharger free after mass blocking incident

ICE-ing incidents would likely continue for some time, and they have practically become an expected part of the EV ownership experience. Fortunately, it appears that the vast majority of ICE-ing incidents involve drivers who inadvertently block off EV charging stations. One of these involved a Cars & Coffee group that ended up mass-ICE-ing a Supercharger. After apologizing for the inconvenience that its members caused, the group opted to welcome EV and Tesla owners, proving that camaraderie and possibly even friendships could result from incidents that typically cause tempers to flare.
