Delaware House Passes Bill to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

Date:

On June 30th, 2020, Delaware made history by becoming the first state in the mid-Atlantic region to legalize recreational marijuana. The Delaware House of Representatives passed House Bill 150, which will allow adults aged 21 and over to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and cultivate up to six plants for personal use. This bill is a major step forward for the state, which has long been in favor of marijuana reform.

The bill was passed with a 24-16 vote, with the majority of Democrats in favor and the majority of Republicans opposed. Governor John Carney has indicated that he will sign the bill into law, making Delaware the 11th state in the US to legalize recreational marijuana.

The bill includes several provisions to ensure that marijuana is regulated and taxed responsibly. It establishes a Cannabis Control Board to oversee the industry, and imposes a 9.25% excise tax on marijuana sales. It also sets up a system of licensing for marijuana businesses, and requires that all marijuana products be tested for safety and potency.

The passage of this bill is a major victory for marijuana advocates in Delaware. It will create jobs, generate tax revenue, and provide access to a safe and regulated product. It will also reduce the number of people arrested for marijuana possession, allowing law enforcement to focus on more serious crimes.

Delaware’s decision to legalize recreational marijuana is a sign of the growing acceptance of cannabis in the US. It is likely that other states in the region will follow suit in the near future, as public opinion continues to shift in favor of marijuana reform.

In the meantime, Delaware residents can look forward to enjoying the benefits of legal recreational marijuana in the near future. With the passage of House Bill 150, Delaware is taking a major step forward in its journey towards cannabis reform.
