California Company Alleges Nintendo Infringing on Patented Technology Without Licensing

Date:

On August 5th, 2020, a California-based company named Gamevice filed a lawsuit against Nintendo alleging that the gaming giant had infringed on its patented technology without licensing it. The lawsuit claims that Nintendo’s Switch console and Joy-Con controllers have violated Gamevice’s patents for a “combination computing device with flexible bridge section” and “electronic gaming device having a flexible bridge section.”

Gamevice is seeking damages for the alleged infringement as well as an injunction to prevent Nintendo from continuing to use the patented technology. The lawsuit claims that Nintendo has been aware of the patents since at least 2015 and has been using them without permission or compensation.

The lawsuit is the latest in a series of patent disputes between the two companies. In 2017, Nintendo sued Gamevice for infringing on its patents related to the Switch console. That case was eventually settled out of court.

Patent infringement is a serious issue in the tech industry, as companies often rely on their intellectual property to protect their products from competitors. Companies can be held liable for damages if they are found to be infringing on another company’s patents.

It remains to be seen how this case will turn out, but it serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting intellectual property rights. Companies should always make sure to properly license any technology they use in their products in order to avoid potential legal issues.
