ALAS Collaborates with Scholastic to Develop a Collection of Books Inspired by Latino Culture

Date:

The Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) has partnered with Scholastic to create a collection of books that celebrate Latino culture. The collaboration aims to provide children with a diverse range of literature that reflects their heritage and promotes cultural awareness.

The ALAS-Scholastic partnership comes at a time when the need for diverse representation in children’s literature is more important than ever. According to a study by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center, only 5% of children’s books published in 2019 featured Latino characters. This lack of representation can have a negative impact on Latino children’s self-esteem and sense of belonging.

The collection of books developed by ALAS and Scholastic will feature stories that highlight the rich history, traditions, and contributions of Latinos in the United States. The books will be written by Latino authors and illustrators, ensuring that the stories are authentic and culturally accurate.

The collection will include both fiction and non-fiction titles, covering a range of topics such as immigration, family, food, and music. The books will be suitable for children of all ages, from preschoolers to middle schoolers.

One of the key goals of the ALAS-Scholastic partnership is to promote bilingualism and biliteracy among Latino children. Many of the books in the collection will be available in both English and Spanish, allowing children to read in their preferred language or practice their second language skills.

The partnership also aims to support Latino educators and school administrators by providing them with resources that promote cultural competence and inclusivity. ALAS and Scholastic will offer professional development opportunities for educators to learn how to incorporate the books into their curriculum and create culturally responsive classrooms.

The ALAS-Scholastic collaboration is a significant step towards promoting diversity and inclusivity in children’s literature. By providing children with books that reflect their heritage and culture, we can help them develop a positive sense of identity and foster a more inclusive society.
