We geleerd een paar weken geleden dat het voormalige hoofd van Marcus, Swati Bhatia, een baan bij Santander had aangenomen om leiding te geven aan het Amerikaanse consumenten- en zakenbankieren.

Gisteren hoorden we meer details over wat deze nieuwe baan gaat inhouden.

Santander aangekondigd dat het zijn Europese digitale bank, Openbank, naar de VS en Mexico zal brengen met een verwachte lancering in de tweede helft van dit jaar. Nu is de zet van Bhatia volkomen logisch.

Ze is een uitstekende keuze om de nieuwe digitale bank te leiden, gezien haar ervaring bij Marcus, en niet te vergeten haar tijd bij Stripe en PayPal. 

Voor degenen onder u die de Europese bankenmarkt niet volgen: Openbank is het grootste digitale bankmerk in Europa in termen van activa, met €18 miljard aan deposito's in Spanje, Portugal, Duitsland en Nederland.

De bank zal in de VS te maken krijgen met hevige concurrentie van zowel fintechs als traditionele banken, waaronder andere die de sprong hebben gemaakt vanuit Groot-Brittannië en Europa.

Als u een golffan bent: verdedigend Masters-kampioen Jon Rahm is de wereldwijde ambassadeur van Santander en zal deze week in Augusta het Openbank-logo op zijn shirt dragen.
