Househunters who bid on a million-dollar 1920s Malvern bungalow at auction next weekend will be helping a local charity.

The entire sale price of the character home at 13 Eton St, which is being advertised with a $1.5m guide, will be donated to The Salvation Army’s SA branch.

Selling agent James Robertson, of Ouwens Casserly Real Estate, said the deceased owner bequeathed his home to the Salvos.

He said the property’s executor had instructed them to auction it, with the sale proceeds to be donated to the charity.

“It’s the first time I’ve heard of it in my time – it’s a pretty massive gesture,” said Mr Robertson, who is selling the property with Nic Pernini.

“It’s a pretty special opportunity for everyone involved.”

He said the three-bedroom, one-bathroom home on a 746sq m block was attracting good interest, with many drawn to it because it was in mostly original condition.

Many also had questions about the home’s ownership and sale proceeds, Mr Robertson said.

“It probably has made people feel pretty good about what their hard-earned is going to go to,” he said.

The Salvation Army regional team leader of gifts and wills John Tobin said the home’s owner had been a strong supporter of the charity.

“They were a supporter years ago,” he said.

“We were, certainly from what I could see, close to his heart.”

Mr Tobin said the Salvos regularly received gifts in wills, usually a percentage of a person’s assets, but they weren’t often as large as this one.

“The magnitude of the gift came somewhat as a surprise, it’s pretty rare,” he said.

“It’s not uncommon for people to leave gifts … but the magnitude of this gift is certainly not common in SA.

“A gift of that size can make a significant difference in our capacity to provide services.”

Mr Tobin said large gifts often went towards major projects that helped those in the community in desperate need, including the homeless and people experiencing domestic violence.

The property will go under the hammer at 3pm on Saturday, February 17.
