In the last couple of years, virtual reality has gained major currency as one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Understanding the potential of VR as the future of media, major social media platforms have made fair use of the technology. However, Netflix being one of the biggest OTT platforms, was yet to join the race.
VR Project
Catching up with the rest, Netflix announced that in the past July, the media giant has partnered up with prolific TV content creator Shonda Rhimes. Together, they will develop Netflix’s first-ever VR social content. However, the media company has since gone absolutely tight-lipped about any further project. This has led to an assumption that Netflix might be soon making announcements for their official VR release.
VR Game
Although the streaming platform is yet to launch its VR media content, it has already launched its own VR game a couple of months ago. Titled “Eden Unearthed”, the game is now available on Oculus Quest headsets. Those interested can download the game from the App Lab free of cost.
Eden Unearthed
Eden Unearthed is quite a unique virtual reality-based game. Among thousands of thrillers, adrenaline-pumped racing, or violent shooting games, it feels like a breath of fresh air. Eden Unearthed is a rather sweet, short, and feel-good interactive virtual experience that features a futuristic motorcycle ride across a stunning landscape inhabited by friendly robots. The gameplay too is nothing short of soothing, but exciting at the same time. It is largely simplistic as well. All you need to do is navigate through a variety of obstacles and collect the apples scattered all over the place. The fruits are to be used as biofuel for your ride.
Journey
The goal of the stunning VR game, as appears from its first look, is to travel as far and as fast as possible. As your journey progresses, you will come across different landmarks. You can use your cool hologram device to learn more about these places and the magical land through a series of 2D videos as well as audio narrations.
Replaced by robots
Eden Unearthed is essentially based on a Netflix anime titled Eden that recently premiered. It is said to be a companion experience to the movie and revolves around the land where the protagonist wakes up after a long stasis. Set in a distant future, the movie tells the story of this young girl who finds the new world is replaced by robots and has no trace of humanity wheresoever. Teaming up with her unlikely robot caregivers, the protagonist then embarks on a journey to unravel the truths that led to the disappearance of humanity.
The game is still a work-in-progress. However, the fact that is published in the App Lab might imply that a bigger experience is waiting around the corner to come out.
