PlayStation VR has seen several big titles arrive over the latest couple of months including Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series and Pistol Whip. Today, it has just been confirmed that the PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft will soon be getting virtual reality (VR) support.
At some point in September developer Mojang will be releasing a free patch for the standard version of Minecraft, thus allowing owners to grab their PlayStation VR’s and step right into the worlds they’ve created.
The announcement was made by Mojang’s Roger Carpenter via PlayStation Blog, revealing that: “PS VR support has actually been a planned PS4 feature since we got the thumbs-up from Sony to bring cross platform play and the Bedrock version to PlayStation 4.”
Carpenter goes on to say: “It is 100% the same Minecraft game…Nothing removed. 100% wholesome & pure full-fat Minecraft.” So that should make traditional fans happy who want to see what VR brings to the experience. Created in collaboration with SkyBox Labs, the VR version will feature new settings so that players can tweak the title to their liking. It’ll also feature Immersive and Living Room modes, although he didn’t go into detail about how these exactly work.
Controls will still be handled via the DualShock 4 so there’s no need to get reacquainted with any of the main mechanics.
The announcement kick starts a week of PlayStation VR new and game updates which are going to be shared at the same time each day. Then on Wednesday, 9th September, there will be a VR sale via the PlayStation Store, discounting titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Blood & Truth, Borderlands 2 VR, Firewall Zero Hour, Superhot VR and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood.
There’s no exact date for the release of the VR patch this month. When that is revealed VRFocus will let you know.
