Manchester United manager Ole Solskjaer invests in esports

Manchester United’s manager and former Norwegian soccer player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been announced as the new co-owner of ULTI Agency, a company that represents pro gamers. Solskjaer will become a minority shareholder in the company, after he and his agent Jim Solbakken acquired a combined 25% of the company through their ventures.

“Esports has become bigger than anyone would have dared to predict just a few years ago. It spreads the joy of sports worldwide. That is exciting, and Ulti Agency is a company with big plans. They’re all about seeing the players and giving them a chance,” said Solskjaer in an official statement.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a Norwegian soccer coach and former player. He is currently managing Manchester United, after playing for the team for over 10 years. As a player, he helped Manchester United win the Champions League in 1999.

With the onboarding of Solskjaer and Solbakken, ULTI has strengthened its Norwegian roots. The company was founded by professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player Joakim ‘jkaem” Myrbostad in 2020. Currently, it has a European and North American branch. In the press release, ULTI says that it wants to enter the Asian and South American markets.

Soccer and esports are becoming more and more intertwined. David Beckham is involved as an investor and representative for Guild Esports and Gareth Bale founded Ellevens Esports. They join the likes of Stephen Curry, Odell Beckham Jr., Steve Young, and many more traditional sports personalities to jump into the industry.

Several big European soccer teams have started investing in esports over the past few years. German team FC Schalke 04 has a League of Legends team that competes in the LEC, where they have found relative success. Paris Saint-Germain, possibly the biggest team in France, co-sponsors teams in League of Legends and Dota 2 in PSG Talon and PSG.LGD, respectively. Teams like Manchester City, Wolfsburg, Valencia CF, and Sporting Lisboa have also invested in esports organizations over the past few years.

MSI 2021: Rumble stage scores and standings

Riot introduced a new format for this year’s Mid-Season Invitational, giving League of Legends teams more of an incentive to perform on the international stage by scrapping the tedious play-ins and adding a bonus prize for the winner.

There’s the group stage, which involved 11 teams from 11 regions and included a quadruple round-robin in Group A and best-of-one double round-robin in Groups B and C. And then there’s the rumble and knockout stage.

In the rumble stage, the two top teams from each group will play another best-of-one double round-robin to decide which four teams make it to the knockout stage, where they’ll play a pair of best-of-five matches to crown the champion of MSI 2021.

Here are the scores, standings, and results for the rumble stage at MSI 2021.

Blizzard lowers cost of cloning a character in WoW Classic

After “careful consideration,” Blizzard has decided to lower the cost of cloning a character in World of Warcraft Classic to $15, the developer revealed today.

Beginning May 18 with the launch of the Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch, players will have to choose whether to progress their characters to TBC, which comes out on June 1, or continue to play WoW Classic content on a new 1-60 “Classic Era” realm.

The service provides players with a second copy of a character in an earlier version of the game. Blizzard’s “concept” of the value of this service was “largely based” on how the developer prices other optional items and services. The original price to use this character closing service was $35 per character.

But after backlash from the community with big names like Asmongold speaking out about the paid service, describing it as “milking” players out of their money, Blizzard has had to rethink its strategy.

“A lower price will likely still accomplish our goals with the new service, while allowing many more players to explore the option of players characters on both Classic Era and Burning Crusade Classic realms,” Blizzard said.

The TBC pre-patch is scheduled to launch on Tuesday, May 18. It will introduce the Blood Elf race to the Horde and Draenei to the Alliance as well as a paid level 58 boost leading up to the grand opening of the Dark Portal on June 1.
