The Trump administration blocked a request for Anthony Fauci to testify before a House subcommittee investigating the coronavirus outbreak and response.

When asked why the nation’s top infectious-disease expert was barred from testifying, a White House spokesperson told Insider that it was “counter-productive” to have people involved in the administration’s coronavirus response “appearing at Congressional hearings.”

Fauci, who is on the White House coronavirus task force, has become one of the most trusted voices in the country amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Here what life is like onboard the last cruise ship on the ocean, which was described as a ‘virus-free bubble.’

Costa Cruises Costa Deliziosa

Costa Cruises

The Costa Deliziosa left Venice, Italy, on January 5, 2020, pre-pandemic. It was meant to return to Venice on April 26 after a 113-day around-the-world voyage.

Once the World Health Organization issued a pandemic alert, its itinerary was totally altered. The Costa Deliziosa stopped making port calls on March 14 and spent its last five weeks sailing the oceans with virtually no human contact outside of the ship.

It recorded no cases of COVID-19 aboard, and all guests disembarked in Genoa, Italy, on April 22, 2020.

A lawsuit, filed April 30, alleges that the federal government is violating the due-process rights of noncitizens.

At bond hearings, immigrants are forced to prove they are not a danger or flight risk. It’s “constitutionally deficient, and it just makes no sense,” attorney Deborah Marcuse argued in an interview with Business Insider.

Plaintiffs say the pandemic should spur the government to rethink its approach to immigrant detention. There are 552 confirmed cases of detained immigrants with COVID-19, as of May 1, out of 1,073 who have been tested.

The state web page describing California’s stay-at-home order gives a “nonexhaustive” list of outdoor recreational activities that Californians are allowed to do.

Among them are: exploring rock pools, kite boarding, skateboarding (not in groups), and rock climbing.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Friday that California is “many days, not weeks” away from beginning to relax its stay-at-home order.

Thousands of foreign workers overseas are getting $1,200 stimulus checks due to a glitch in an IRS system.

One tax expert says the mistake was likely prompted by the wrong tax forms being used by temporary workers.

There are also reports of deceased people receiving stimulus checks in the US.

Brazil, which has a population of more than 209 million, has reported more than 91,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and at least 6,300 deaths from the virus.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the virus for weeks and even encouraged protesters calling for state-issued lockdowns to be lifted.

The country has yet to hit its peak in COVID-19 cases, and experts worry that the case count and death toll could be much higher than reported.
