How can you make a farming game more interesting? Someone at Frame Break probably answered that hypothetical question with “mechs” and lead them to make Lightyear Frontier.

The indie game got a new trailer at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, featuring an alien planet, lush greenery waiting to be turned into farmlands, and a big, red, giant mech that is made for agriculture rather than military use.

You can shoot seeds, fire a water hose, and suck the harvest with a vacuum plus use a drill to mine for resources. Your all-purpose, upgradeable and customisable mech is all you to farm on this alien planet, no tractors needed.

The mech can be upgraded with new parts, like swapping the bipedal legs to treads, to further explore the alien planet, there’s a mystery that needs investigating. But if you’re more invested in your homestead like building more buildings, you can do that to.

The weather can also be working in or against your favour, impacting positively or negatively on your crops, so you have to make sure to take care of them.

Lightyear Frontier also supports co-op play with up to four players.

Wholesome farming games are in abundance these days, but between the hardcode simulation as depicted in the Farming Simulator series and the cozy, traditional homestead experiences like Stardew Valley and the Story Of Season series, Lightyear Frontier is breaking new ground with its mech-based farming.

Lightyear Frontier will be out in Spring (Q2) 2023 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, and will launch day-1 on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
