JetBlue takes delivery of first Airbus A321LR

Date:

New York-based, JetBlue has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A321 Long Range, registered N4022J, which also features Airbus’ new cabin interior, Airspace. This new aircraft will also support JetBlue’s highly anticipated transatlantic services, which are scheduled to begin this summer.

The Airspace cabin design was initially unveiled in 2017 at the APEX Expo in Long Beach and features customisable hero lighting, which according to Airbus “helps reduce jet lag.” The new award-winning cabin design also has slimmer sidewall panels providing passengers with “extra personal space at shoulder level.” The Airspace cabin also has integrated window shades, larger overhead bins and is designed to give the cabin a wide-body feel.

In a statement seen by AeroNewsX, the Chief Executive of JetBlue, Robin Hayes stated that the airline was “eagerly looking forward” to introducing the A321LR on the carrier’s new transatlantic services. “These aircraft will allow us to offer our customers attentive, boutique-style service, while also ensuring ample personal space, larger overhead bins, customized lighting and a design that gives the cabin a wide-body feel,” he added.

The new cabin layout will also allow JetBlue to offer 24 full-flat adaptive-mattress seats in addition to 114 economy seats. Earlier in February, the carrier unveiled its new premium business class product. This new transatlantic Mint cabin offers 24 individual suites with two Mint suites located on either side of the A321LR cabin.

In a company statement, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer, Christian Scherer outlined that Airbus was “thrilled to have JetBlue set yet another trend” and stated that the comfort and in-flight entertainment system on board the new cabin design “will be a winner” for both JetBlue’s passengers and crew.

The new Airbus A321LR will have “high-speed wifi” and “easy-to-reach in-seat power outlets,” which should allow passengers to stay connected for the duration of their flight. The new inflight entertainment system will also include a selection of live TV channels and an extensive library of shows and movies.

The Airbus A321LR is also a member of the A320neo family but offers an increased range of up to 4,000nm (7,400km). When compared to previous versions of the aircraft type, the A321LR can save operators approximately 30 per cent in fuel in addition to reducing noise emissions by nearly 50 per cent.

The increased range of the A321LR will certainly be beneficial for JetBlue, as it offers the carrier the transatlantic capability with premium wide-body comfort as a single-aisle aircraft cabin. According to Airbus, the North American carrier has another 12 A321LR aircraft on order in addition to 57 Airbus A321neos, which will all be fitted with Airbus’ new award-winning Airspace cabin. The carrier also has 69 Airbus A320 on order, with the first JetBlue A320 entering revenue service earlier this week.
