It will be a little bit longer before Agent 47 enters the gig economy of murdering people. Hitman 3 Freelancer, the free new mode for Hitman 3 won’t be out until January 2023, says developer IO Interactive.

The new mode will see Agent 47 completing various assassination contracts around the World Of Assassination (or, all the different maps of Hitman) with an economy system, collectable weaponry, a customisable safehouse and more. It’s a roguelike mode of sorts but incorporates elements of previous Hitman games.

The mode was expected to release back in Spring of this year, but delayed into the later half of 2022 (which resulted in the new free map releasing back in July in its place), and now to January 26, 2023.

The good news though is that when it launch, it will incorporate all the locations from Hitman 2016, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3. Though you will need to own Hitman 2016 and Hitman 2 on the same platform-or the correct DLC to have those maps accessible in Hitman 3.

Also, starting this November, select players on Steam will be receiving invites for the Closed Technical Test to try out Freelancer mode. This is not only to stress-test the servers (Hitman 3, unfortunately, relies on online connection despite only being a single-player-only game), but to see how the economy and XP balancing shakes out in the real world when in the hand of players.

It’s going to be interesting how Freelancer mode shakes up to be, and IO really is taking their time to release this free content which should be reassuring- as long as servers don’t go down when the update hits.
