On October 18, 2022, the Golden State Warriors will play the Los Angeles Lakers on NBA opening night. Coming off a championship, here’s a look at Golden State Warriors offseason moves.
Signed Warriors
The main re-signing of this offseason for the Warriors was Kevon Looney. The 26-year-old center signed a three year, $22.5 million contract with the Warriors. Though he only notched 6 points per game last season, he did so while averaging 7.3 rebounds and shooting 57% from the field. This season, Looney may get more minutes and be able to shine.
The Warriors also signed Donte DiVincenzo from the Sacramento Kings to a two year, $9 million deal. With the Kings, DiVincezo put up an impressive 10.3 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, and 3.6 assists per game while coming off the bench. In San Francisco, DiVincenzo can back up stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson with reliable bench scoring.
JaMychal Green will suit up for the Warriors this year as well. Green averaged 6.4 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game with the Denver Nuggets last year. At 6-foot-8, he’ll provide needed size to the Warriors.
Rounding up the Warriors’ signings comes Mac McClung with a non-guaranteed contract. After three years of college basketball, the 23-year-old has jumped around a couple rosters, ending up on the Lakers’ G League affiliate. There, he earned a G League Rookie of the Year Award. During the Summer League this year, McClung averaged 13.4 points per game, 3.6 rebounds per game, and 4.8 assists per game. Seeing this performance, it seems likely that McClung’s non-guaranteed contract may turn into a roster spot this year.
Exiting Players
Though the Warriors signings are promising, the team lost five key players this year to free agency. Heading the list is Gary Payton Jr., who has signed with the Portland Trail Blazers. The 29-year-old guard averaged 7.1 points per game last season, adding 1.4 steals per game as well. Throughout the playoffs last year, Payton Jr. guarded stars like Ja Morant, and will clearly be missed for his high-effort defense.
Otto Porter Jr. has signed with the the Toronto Raptors this year. The 6-foot-8 power forward notched 8.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last year, and was a significant bench scorer. It’s likely he’ll take on a more active role in Toronto and increase these numbers.
Other exiting Warriors include Juan Toscano-Anderson who signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, Damion Lee who signed with the Phoenix Suns, and Nemanja Bjelica who signed with a Turkish team called Fenerbahce.
