Double Bay penthouse cracks $100k per sqm for first time in Sydney’s east with $16m sale

Date:

A Double Bay penthouse has sold for a record-breaking price, shocking property observers.

The 149sqm apartment at 16 William St sold for $16m, equating to an incredible $107,0000 per sqm and cracking the $100,000 per sqm mark for the first time for an apartment in Sydney’s east.

The three-bedroom pad atop the Vedalia complex was being offered by Joshua Allen with a $14m price guide for a March 22 auction, but it’s understood he hatched the $16m deal overnight.1st City Double Bay’s Julian Hasemer was the buyer’s agent.

The buyer is a local downsizer.

The property recently appeared as the Wentworth Courier Apartment of the Week.

The deal was the talk of Double Bay this morning, with initial thoughts that the sale was a record per sqm deal for Sydney.

Though insiders remembered some of last year’s May and June sales at Sirius at The Rocks, where the $35m penthouse sold at $112,540 per sqm and a $21m apartment fetched $121,000 per sqm, via CBRE’s Ben Stewart and Justin Brown.
Still, they had a front-row position overlooking the harbour and Opera House.

The Double Bay penthouse certainly has beautiful harbour views, but not of the icons.

There are three bedrooms.

They also offer harbour views.

It does offer everything that an eastern suburbs downsizer craves though, including beautiful entertainment spaces both inside and out, luxurious finishes and proximity to the local fine dining precinct and boutique strip.

The apartment has four parking spots and two storage units on title.

Although a record per sqm, this apartment isn’t the most expensive apartment ever sold in Double Bay.

The penthouse has three beautiful bathrooms.

Allen also put together that deal — $17.5m last July — for an amalgamation of four units in the Vedalia complex to create one exclusive apartment.

Records show that was bought by the former owners of Scotts Honda, Paul Scharrer, and his wife, Pam, who sold their Point Piper boatshed for $37m last March.

Hasemer achieved the previous per sqm record in the east — about $70,000 per sqm — with his $25m sale of the Darling Point apartment home of the former Cruising Yacht Club commodore, Hugo van Kretschmar and his wife, Karen, last October.
