In a presentation given to the officials of Yamuna Express Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed to build a 72km long high-speed metro line connecting two airports, the upcoming Noida airport in Jewar and Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI airport).
The proposed metro line between Delhi IGI airport and Jewar Noida airport will be constructed in two phases and 13 stations between the destinations. During the first phase, a 35km long metro line will be built, with both elevated portions and underground. It will connect Knowledge Park 2 on the Aqua Line with the Noida airport. There will be an interchange at Knowledge Park 2 with seven stations.
DPR of the Proposed Metro Line to Be Ready by March 31
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the proposed metro line by March 31, according to TOI. The second phase will be built only after a feasibility study. According to unnamed sources, the second phase will likely be 37km long and will start from Knowledge Park 2 and will extend up to New Delhi railway station. The second phase metro line will be parallel to the Noida expressway with New Ashok Nagar and Yamuna Bank stations. According to TOI, the estimated cost for the construction of phase one of the metro line will be around Rs 5000 crore.
The trains on the proposed metro line on the said routes will be faster than the usual metro lines and would cover the distance between two airports in less than an hour, with interchanges in between.
Noida International Airport in Jewar is under construction and would be the largest in India on completion. It will also be the first airport with net-zero emissions. The airport is planned across 1,334 hectares at Jewar. Strategically, the airport will be located 72km from Delhi IGI airport, 52km from Noida, 90km from Multi-modal Logistics Hub at Dadri and 130km from Agra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the airport’s foundation stone in November 2021. YEIDA is the implementation agency of the project in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh government. The project is progressing in four phases, and the first phase is expected to complete by September 2024.
