City easing some cannabis store restrictions

City of Leduc council approved an amendment to the land use bylaw that informs cannabis stores in the city, removing the 100 metre restriction between liquor and cannabis stores.

Administration received an application for a new cannabis shop from the owners of a truck stop in city boundaries, because the business already has a liquor store on the land the original bylaw restricted opening a new store.

Municipalities in Alberta set their own bylaws for cannabis public use and land use when it was legalized in Canada in 2018. Initially the land use bylaws within the city enforced 100 metre distance between both different cannabis stores and, cannabis and liquor stores.

The July 6 regular meeting began with a public hearing for the bylaw amendment. The sole speaker said that some municipalities in the region don’t enforce this same bylaw and noted that there is a business in Nisku that has both a liquor store and cannabis store on the same lot.
