Candela Cabin Cruiser Concept Takes Flight!

Date:

The new Candela P-8 Voyager cabin cruiser made its debut last week at the Salone Nautico show in Venice. The new craft is aimed squarely at Vencie’s water taxi business, and the company helps it hopes will replace the gas and diesel-belching motorboats currently used by commercial operators in the area.

Measuring 28 feet long by just over 8 wide with an ultra lightweight carbon fiber hull fitted with a pair of retracting foils– the rear one paired with a whisper-quiet 50-kW Candela C-POD electric motor, the new e-foiler is good for a cruising speed of 20 knots and bursts up to 30 knots (approx. 35 mph– which, on water, is moving!). Inside, the vibe is very minimalistic (which you’d expect from a Swedish boat company), but upscale– giving the impression that the Candela’s cabin might be a decent enough place to spend an afternoon cruising Venice in.

But, like– fast!

Even with all the fancy engineering and stealthy, go-fast goodness on display here, you’re probably repeating that old bromide about boat ownership to yourself as you read this. The one that goes, “The two best days of boat ownership are the day you buy your boat, and the day you sell your boat.” Not so with the Candela— at least, that’s the promise made by a line in the press release that reads, “freed from gears and with very few moving parts, the Candela C-POD will last several thousand hours without any maintenance whatsoever,” (emphasis theirs).

The Voyager concept is set to expand an already exciting all-electric lineup that includes the Candela C-7 sports boat and the previously revealed C-8 day cruiser, which is set to begin series production later this year. After landing a $25.8 million funding round led by EQT Ventures last year, Candela also has plans to put a 30-passenger ferry into commercial operation on the waterways of its native Stockholm by 2023– which sounds super fun for anyone taking European delivery of a new Volvo next year.

I’ll let you know!
