Borderlands 3 is about to implement cross-platform play, but PlayStation consoles will be excluded from the deal, according to Randy Pitchford, CEO of developer Gearbox Software.
Pitchford tweeted the details out Thursday, saying that crossplay was ready for all platforms but that publisher 2K Games required the studio to remove the feature from the PlayStation version of the game.
“Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms,” Pitchford wrote. “Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.”
Pitchford didn’t provide a reason for the removal, but it’s possible Sony prevented the implementation of crossplay. The lawsuit between Apple and Epic Games revealed Epic had made a special agreement with Sony to enable crossplay in Fortnite that required it to pay additional fees to Sony. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that Sony was the only platform holder that required those fees during testimony.
“In certain circumstances Epic will have to pay additional revenue to Sony,” Sweeney said. “If somebody were primarily playing on PlayStation, but paying on iPone then this might trigger compensation.”
Sony may have been pushing for a similar deal with 2K Games, and the publisher may have opted not to pay, leading to the lack of crossplay on PlayStation. It wouldn’t be the first time Sony has been hostile to crossplay on PlayStation. The company also initially blocked crossplay for both Rocket League and Minecraft. It wasn’t until its decision to block Fortnite crossplay in 2018 caused a backlash from fans that Sony decided to adopt a new policy that enabled crossplay in certain games.
For now, PlayStation fans will have to go without crossplay in Borderlands.
