Mexico is the gateway to luxury tourism in the American continent, so of course we are delighted to be part of this opportunity, and operate a property like Hacienda Xcanatun,” said Peter Hechler, SAVP, Head-Regional Operations MENA (Middle East, Europe, North Africa & Americas).

The prestigious Asian luxury hospitality group Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts announces the launch of its third property in Mexico: Hacienda Xcanatun, which will be operated by its upscale brand Angsana. Located just 15 minutes from the center of Merida, 10 minutes from the archaeological zone of Dzibilchaltún, and 20 minutes from the beaches of Puerto Progreso, the hacienda promises to be a new historic, chic oasis in the region as of July 1.

The structure, renovation, and setting of Hacienda Xcanatun are presented as a contemporary reimagining of the legendary Yucatan henequenera haciendas (large agricultural haciendas of the 18th century, henequen being a type of agave plant). This oasis on the periphery of Merida, represents a new commitment from the renowned hotel group to highlight and promote this destination within its global portfolio, as it is a living testimony to the rich historical heritage and culture of Mexico.

“Mexico is the gateway to luxury tourism in the American continent, so of course we are delighted to be part of this opportunity, and operate a property like Hacienda Xcanatun,” said Peter Hechler, SAVP, Head-Regional Operations MENA (Middle East, Europe, North Africa & Americas). “This will be our first property managed by Angsana in the country, and we are proud to bring the brand to this terrestrial paradise in the midst of the Yucatan Peninsula.”

Now, under the seal of quality and global standards of Angsana, the hacienda has evolved into a more contemporary space, with the aim of being the first local resort, living and promoting the philosophy of carefree luxury, and enjoying the best moments, without sacrificing tradition and proximity to the precious historic sites of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The property design is historically-chic, inspired by Yucatan culture. The ruins of the original structure, destroyed by hurricane Gilberto in 1988, and reopened in 2000, have been preserved. Pre-Hispanic and modern elements are incorporated throughout the new design and renovation.

The Hacienda Xcanatun reflects the harmonic authenticity of a historic legacy, showcasing contemporary art, and comfortable modernity. The feeling of tranquility is apparent throughout the Hacienda. The updated experience includes 18 renovated suites designed by renowned Mexican architectural firm Estudio 240; Casa de Piedra restaurant with the esteemed chef Paloma Ponce at the helm; and the calming Spa by Angsana, which preserves ancient Asiatic traditions from the Banyan Tree Academy.

The spa draws upon traditional eastern traditions such as aromatherapy, using natural ingredients and world-renowned Asian techniques. The flagship restaurant offers cuisine dating back to the origins of the region, with local ingredients as the cornerstone of a memorable culinary experience, inspired by French techniques combined with a distinctively Mexican touch. From cooking classes to gastronomic activities and pairings, everything is tailored to provide guests and clients with a greater connection to the history and gastronomic identity of the region.

As a part of the philosophy of Angsana Hotels & Resorts, this new property seeks to be a part of the life and harmony of the local community, functioning under firm principles of sustainability and social responsibility. The Hacienda Xcanatun is a part of the Comisaria Meridana de Xcanatun and will support several projects dedicated to inclusion and community collaboration. The property will preserve the natural flora and fauna with a garden for iguanas, coatimundis, herons and a diverse array of birds.

Angsana Hotels & Resorts operates 19 hotels and resorts in 10 different countries. The organization brings adventure to travelers, whatever their age or reason for visiting, intertwining chic venues with a vibrant atmosphere full of culture, astonishing even the most discerning of guests.

Banyan Tree Group will open the doors of the renovated property on July 1, in accordance with the regulations of the federal and state governments and through the use of the “Safe Sanctuary” standards — derived from an international certification in safety and wellbeing protocols developed by the Belgian company Bureau Veritas. Banyan Tree Group and Angsana Hotels & Resorts are dedicated entirely to ensuring the health and wellbeing of all guests who visit their spaces.
