ATR team from France will visit India to investigate tire burst incident

IndiGo flight 6E-7979 flying from Kannur to Hubbali, suffered a tire burst while landing on 14th June 2021, causing the main runway to be closed for 12 hours. There were five passengers and four crew members on board when the incident took place.

The preliminary report suggests that the incident happened due the bad weather along with high wind and rain. The aircraft was on its second attempt to land, during which it suffered a double nose gear tire burst. The technical team from Bengaluru visited Kannur for an initial investigation of the ATR-72 manufactured by ATR in France and Italy. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also started its investigation into the incident and has already visited the site. French technical team from ATR will be arriving in India to investigate the incident by month-end.

Airport director, Pramod Kumar Thakre, confirmed the incident and said: “From the airport side, the runway, ATC and everything were fine on the day of the tire burst incident. Even the pilot had not reported any issue while landing.”

In another separate incident, 3 IndiGo aircraft and 2 Go First aircraft were damaged due to unexpected thunderstorms. IndiGo confirmed this incident and said: “Ahmedabad airport was hit by an unexpected thunderstorm with extremely high winds last evening. This event impacted all airlines’ aircraft parked at Ahmedabad airport, with three IndiGo aircraft sustaining minor/non-structural damages that will require the replacement of certain parts. The aircraft shall be in operations after necessary repairs.
