Ai-Da the robot participated in a discussion about how technology is influencing—and maybe constricting—the art world before the Communications and Digital Committee of Britain as part of an inquiry into the future of the creative industries.

Ai-Da robot was questioned by House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee members about the connection between artificial intelligence, robots, and the arts. A robot testified in the upper chamber of the British Parliament, where unelected baronesses and lords generally congregate to discuss legislative initiatives for the first time in the country’s history.

Ai-Da, a robot with a humanoid face and robotic limbs with a sleek black bob and bangs, a bright orange shirt, denim overalls, and robotic arms, responded to inquiries from the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee on Tuesday. The discussion’s focus was on technology’s place in art.

Although Ai-Da acknowledged she had no idea where things were going, she told the committee that creativity faces “both a threat and an opportunity” from technology.

“My talk at the House of Lords will aim to encourage discussion about creativity. I will show how artificial intelligence and robotics can be used to create artworks that are expressive and visually compelling. I believe that machine creativity presents a great opportunity for us to explore new ideas and ways of thinking.

A question from Baroness Lynne Featherstone, a peer from the Liberal Democrats party, caused the robot to become mute and look blankly at the ground. The audience members laughed that they were afraid but appeared curious anyway. After the technical issue, Ai-Da was reset and back online.

Ai-Da created a painting of the late monarch called “Algorithm Queen” to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee earlier this year. Critics criticized the artwork for lacking passion, but her owner lauded it as the first portrait of the queen ever produced by a robot.

The first ultra-realistic humanoid robot artist in the world is Ai-Da. Ai-Da is a 2019-completed artificial intelligence robot that creates sculptures, paintings, and sketches. She bears Ada Lovelace’s name. When the robot used her prosthetic hand and cameras in her eyes to draw humans from sight using a pencil, it attracted attention from all over the world.

Aidan Meller, an expert in modern and contemporary art, and a group of scientists from Oxford University built the robot in 2019.

Who invented the Ai-Da robot?

Who owns Ai-Da? Aidan Meller, a gallerist, and Engineered Arts, a Cornish robotics business, created Ai-Da. Salaheldin Al Abd and Ziad Abass created her drawing arm, two undergraduate students from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Leeds. In contrast, computer AI experts created her drawing intelligence at the University of Oxford. Ai-Da debuted her new painting arm, which allowed her to use a palette, at the British Library in London in April 2022.
