Agreements With Russian Airline Partners Are Being Terminated by American Airlines

Date:

American Airlines

As part of the global response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, American Airlines has stopped its interline agreements with Aeroflot and S7 Airlines. Delta Air Lines has suspended its relationship with fellow SkyTeam member Aeroflot, prompting America’s move. The oneworld alliance includes American Airlines and S7 Airlines, which is headquartered in Novosibirsk.

The suspension was announced by American Airlines on Tuesday. Given Aeroflot’s SkyTeam membership and built-in relationship with Delta, American’s interline arrangement with Aeroflot is uncommon. However, the partnership is one of more than 100 Aeroflot has with airlines all over the world. However, as airlines hurry to break relations with Russia, that number seems to be shrinking rapidly.

S7 Airlines has had to cancel flights to 16 European cities till March 13 due to the closing of EU airspace to Russian airlines. The United States has yet to prohibit Russian airlines from flying into its airspace. American Airlines does not fly to Russia or use its airspace at the moment.

Because of their oneworld memberships, American’s relationship with S7 Airlines is a little more complicated. Not only may either airline sell tickets to travel on the other’s airline, but both airlines also recognise each other’s frequent fliers and provide options for points earning and redemption.
