5 Things Learned From College Football Week 4

Date:

College football week 4 is in the books. After every week fans can take away things from what happened on the field. Here are 5 things learned from college football week 4.

1. Kansas State has Oklahoma’s Number

In one of the games that involved a top 10 team losing, Kansas State defeated Oklahoma in Norman. This comes a week after the Wildcats lost to Tulane at home. They were able to put 41 points up on Oklahoma’s defense thanks to stellar offensive performances from quarterback Adrian Martinez and running back Deuce Vaughn.

This isn’t just an upset for this year, Kansas State has upset the Sooners three out of the last four seasons. While Oklahoma has still gone on to be successful in those seasons, it doesn’t make things any easier, especially in Brent Venables first season as a head coach. Oklahoma is leaving for the SEC so they will get a respite from the Wildcats very soon.

2. Texas A&M Bounced Back

The other game involving a top 10 team losing was Texas A&M defeating Arkansas. Jimbo Fisher made the change to put Max Johnson in at quarterback and it has certainly helped, even if there are some big scheme issues. The defense also helped out with a defensive touchdown on a scoop’n score that required a handoff from one teammate to another to keep it alive. In the end, Arkansas missed a field goal that it the top of the upright and bounced out to give Texas A&M the win.

After losing to Appalachian State, the Aggies defeated Miami in an ugly game for week 3. This game shows they have bounced back and improved. As mentioned, their offense needs some work, but they were able to run the ball effectively against Arkansas, which really opened things up for the rest of the offense. The Aggies maybe aren’t as good as they were ranked in the preseason, but they are still a team capable of some big wins.

3. Tennessee is Really Good

Tennessee had a tough rivalry game with Florida this weekend. They were able to prevail 38-33. It was an impressive win given that the Volunteers were without their top receiver Cedric Tillman and defeated a top 25 team. They also defeated Pittsburgh on the road early in the season.

Josh Heupel has done a fantastic job turning the Tennessee program around. Quarterback Hendon Hooker has operated the offense in fantastic fashion and they are averaging 48.5 points per game. There is potential for Tennessee to make a New Year’s Six Bowl this season.

4. Clemson’s Offense Looked a Lot Better

Clemson’s offense has drawn a lot of criticism over the last two seasons. This stems from both bad scheme and subpar quarterback play. In week 4 they were able to put up 51 points against Wake Forest in an overtime win and the offense looked better. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei passed for 371 yards and five touchdowns, while running back Will Shipley rushed for 104 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

The Tigers’ defense gave up more points than they are accustomed to against Wake, so it was very important for the offense to put up points. If they can keep this momentum going, it will really help them, as they have a tough game against NC State in week 5.

5. Texas and Miami aren’t Back

Watching programs come back to life after a downturn is something that fans watch out for every season. It doesn’t happen all the time and usually some wins or performances by former college football giants are just a mirage. That seems to be the case this season with both Texas and Miami.

Texas looked very good in their loss to Alabama, which gave some hope to the future. This week they lost in Lubbock to Texas Tech. The loss doesn’t end their season, but it shows that there is still a lot of progress to be made. Miami was ranked highly before losing to Texas A&M in a close game. They just haven’t built the program up enough yet in order to win that type of game. The follow-up performance against Middle Tennessee was abysmal, again showing that a lot of progress is still needed.
