5 of Europe’s best workplaces, and why

Recently, Great Place to Work revealed its list of Europe’s Best Workplaces for 2022. In the Multinational rankings, 25 huge companies, many of them household names, came out on top.

We’re taking a look at five of the winners below, and discovering how they made the grade: some offer an inclusive working environment, some have excellent comprehensive benefits and some have an immersive culture that’s a talent acquisition strategy all in its own right – writes Kirstie McDermott, Senior Content Manager, Amply.

DHL

DHL calls itself the world’s most international company, operating in more than 220 countries and territories including Portugal, Romania, Scandinavia, the UK and Poland. The company has a range of supports and programmes for employees to support diversity and inclusion, career growth and training and development.

A group-wide certified initiative ensures all employees are trained and certified as specialists within their respective divisions. That then feeds into the fact that 83% of management positions at the company are filled by internal candidates, because the company believes in fostering long-term career development. Salesforce

Founded in 1999, Salesforce opened its first European office in Ireland in 2000. Now it is the  global leader in customer relationship management (CRM) software, and has offices across 13 European countries, employing over 9,100 people. Winner of one of the best workplaces in Europe four years in a row, it’s not hard to see why.

Salesforce has programmes in place for racial equality and justice, philanthropy (it donated $500,000 to United Way Worldwide for the BET Covid-19 relief fund, for example) as well as in purchasing to help close the racial wealth gap.

In this area, it aims to commit $100M to Black-owned businesses, and $100M to underrepresented minority founders’ companies by 2023. Additionally, Salesforce is working towards climate action programs, sequestering 100 gigatons of carbon through conserving, restoring, and growing 1 trillion trees.

Cisco

Founded in the U.S. in 1984 and operating in Europe since 1989, Cisco helped to build the backbone of the web. Known for a variety of products including networking hardware and WebEx video conferencing software, this huge company has a presence worldwide, including in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and The Netherlands.

Cisco has a great reputation as an employer, winning multiple awards for best European and global workplace. Staff are treated to a variety of perks and benefits including an employee stock purchase program, which allows workers to buy Cisco stock at a discount, up to 10% of their salary. Teams can also receive reimbursement for tuition, lab fees and books for coursework at an accredited institution.

Employees get five paid days each year to volunteer for causes that matter most to them and the company’s foundation has given social impact grants to non-profit organisations to support early-phase, technology-based solutions that serve underrepresented and vulnerable populations too.

Deloitte

Professional services firm Deloitte is one of the “big 4” and is a leading global provider of audit and assurance, consulting, financial advisory, risk advisory, tax, and related services. The company employs around 345,374 people globally, with around 109,340 of those working in Europe.

Deloitte goes big on benefits and compensation for its people, with the aim of creating a culture that promotes personal and professional development. Providing support for employees’ personal and professional development is a key factor in its talent acquisition strategy and it offers (territory dependent) a wide range of programmes to support families, among other benefits. These include adoptive/surrogacy leave, parental leave and parents’ leave, as well as foster care and carers leave.

The company has also made provisions for how its teams want to work, with options for compressed working weeks in the summer, and hybrid working. Additionally, training and development are important here: in-house courses are held regularly, and the firm will financially support its people in their professional education too. Adobe

The company that makes the household name that is the PDF, Adobe is also known for its Creative Suite of cloud-based creative tools which includes Photoshop and Illustrator. Adobe has numerous locations across Europe, including the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, Poland, Italy and France.

Truly a company where creativity flourishes, it offers its people money towards higher education and professional development. Additionally for those looking for career longevity, leadership development opportunities are also available in conjunction with third parties.
