Zipair resumes flights to Honolulu, to launch flights to Singapore

Date:

Japanese low-cost airline, Zipair, owned by Japan Airlines, on Wednesday resumed services to the Hawaiian capital of Honolulu with its Boeing 787-8. The airline also announced it would be expanding its network with services to Singapore.

Tokyo to Honolulu

48 people were on board the first Zipair flight since February between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu, which according to a local media source is a record number of passengers for the service which began in December on an irregularly scheduled basis.

According to the same source, the flights have been optimised to a regular schedule, operating once a week on Wednesday. The carrier has announced that from October 1, flights will be increased to twice weekly with the additional service departing Tokyo on Friday.

Tokyo to Singapore

Zipair on Wednesday announced its intention to launch a connection between Tokyo and Singapore once a week with a Boeing 787-8. The carrier will service the route on Tuesdays, launching on September 7 until October 26.

“Singapore is also a trading nation, so there is likely to be cargo demand from Asia to Japan and North America via Japan, so we have started operations once a week,” explained Shingo Nishida, President and CEO of Zipair.

Nishida continued: “We are pleased to announce that ZIPAIR is expanding our international network this September and will feature scheduled service to Singapore as our fourth destination. Singapore is not only known as a global financial and logistics hub in Southeast Asia, but also an attractive city featuring a multi-ethnic culture.”

Once launched, Singapore will become the carrier’s fourth route.

Further expansion

Zipair is also examining a launch of flights to Taipei. However, due to COVID-19, preparations are delayed. “Under the corona wreck, administrative procedures are in an unusual state. If the procedures can be started as soon as they are completed,” Nishida explained.

Zipair began operations last year in June as cargo-only. The carrier operates a fleet of Boeing 787s, leased from parent Japan Airlines. The airline’s network currently comprises three destinations, including Seoul, Bangkok and Honolulu.
