You Can Now Buy Valve Index Controller & Tether Replacements

Published

on

Accidentally breaking a motion controller or finding out your all-important headset cable has been chewed through by a pet can ruin anyone’s day, especially for a device as costly as Valve Index. Now Valve has made replacements controllers and headset tethers available for purchase. They’re pricey, but it may get you back in the game sooner.

Valve now offers both left and right Index controllers, which are priced at $150 each. When bought in a left/right bundle, a full pair costs $280, effectively putting a $10 premium on top of each controller when purchased separately. Thankfully the controller comes with a lanyard, although it doesn’t seem Valve is offering those on their own.

Index replacement tethers are priced at $130. At the time of this writing, separate controllers and tethers appear to only be available in North America, Europe and the UK.

Since neither separate controllers nor tethers have been commercially available up until now, Valve Index users have typically had to go the route of simply asking Valve for a return merchandise authorization (RMA) on damaged accessories. Some have reported luck with obviously damaged parts, which seemingly goes against the company’s limited warranty.

It’s not clear whether Valve’s reported leniency with RMAs will change now that you can buy replacement parts for two of the most fragile bits. Still, if you’re in doubt whether Valve will cover whatever damage your controllers or tether sustained, it’s better to contact Steam support first before throwing money at the problem. If you’re denied though, at very least you can now buy the new first-part parts you need.

Firewatch VR Mod In The Works

Published

on

An unofficial Firewatch VR mod is in the works.

Developer elliotttate teased work on the mod with some GIFs and videos on UploadVR’s Discord channel last week.

Firewatch VR Mod In The Works

Firewatch is a story-driven adventure and the debut game from Campo Santo, the studio that went on to be acquired by Valve and worked on Half-Life: Alyx. The game follows Henry, who spends a summer living in a lookout tower at Shoshone National Forest. As Henry reckons with personal trauma his connection to someone in another lookout draws him closer into a mystery.

Firewatch’s narrative-first approach won it a lot of fans when it first launched in 2016, and many think that its gorgeous setting and pacing would make for a great VR port. In fact, we’re a little surprised that it isn’t hasn’t had official integration all these years on. That said, artist Jane Nh did bring the game’s most iconic location to Valve’s Destinations app five years ago.

These GIFs confirm that the mod will have motion controller support, including being able to point at items with your hand, grab them from afar and then physically hold them. It’s being modded directly in-engine to hopefully make for a native-feeling experience. That’s about all the details we have for now, but we should be able to bring you more as the mod gets closer to launch (which, again, we don’t have a window for just yet).

Check out a more in-depth look at gameplay below, even showing the player holding a map and compass at the same time:

Exhibits and experiments that are music to your ears

And while you transform your melodies, you can also check out some fun facts about each maestro or dive deeper into the rich music-themed stories and online exhibitions our newest partners are also launching today on Google Arts & Culture.

MILA, a French association fostering the local scene, steps into the stories of a true Parisian gem, the “Rue de la Musique” – the street of music. Nestled in Paris’ Montmartre district, independent music makers, record labels and record shops have transformed an entire neighborhood into an effervescent music scene. One example: Record Makers, one of the most influential French Touch labels, settled in an old bakery where French pop legend Joe Dassin used to buy his croissants.

In Pune, India, the Baithak Foundation publishes its collection of rare archival interviews and recordings of Indian classical music. They’re also launching new stories about Indian ragas and the correct time to sing them, and exhibits on maestros like Pandit Vijay Sardeshmukh or Ustad Amir Khan, founder of Indore gharana. Facebook Developing VR Wristband That Operates via Brain Signals

Published

on

Facebook is coming out with a new virtual reality wristband that can obtain brain signals and use them to enhance the level of control in its AR glasses.

Technology brand Facebook is stepping up its efforts in the augmented reality space. It is set to release a new set of AR glasses in the near future. More recently, the company has indicated that the new AR offering can be controlled with a state-of-the-art VR band.

CTRL-Labs

The new wristband technology is being developed by the company CTRL-Labs, and are equipped with electromyography (EMG) for signal interpretation. It will enable the device to analyse signals coming from a user’s spinal cord. These signals are then converted into suitable actions.

Principles of humans thoughts

Facebook has given some insight into how the new technology is set to work in a blog. According to the company, the technology will basically work on the principles of human thoughts and how individuals choose how to respond to certain thoughts. After a thought is processed, a person’s brain relays on information to their body parts. Signals sent to one’s fingers tells them whether to perform actions like swiping, pinching or typing.

According to the company, the technology is centred around reading signals at a person’s wrist and noting what decisions they have decided to perform. It interprets those actions into digital instructions for the user’s device.

EMG Technology

Based on some observations, signals transmitted through the wrist are quite clear and the EMG technology can be used for precise detection of finger motion. It is a capability that can reduce the need for user inputs.

The Verge has come out with more information about the wristbands, hinting that the device will have several other features. It stated that the device could be used for tracking nerve signals sent to fingers by the brain. As a result, users can easily take advantage of something like a virtual keyboard.

The wristbands are also adaptive to how users type, and they can easily adjust how fingers move during different movements including those leading to typos. It can automatically correct errors and make suggestions regarding the right words to type.

Predict likes and interests

According to Facebook, the new technology can be customised to accommodate the different behaviours of users. This is achieved by the use of machine learning, a technology that can predict the likes and interests of users.

Tanya Jonker, Research Science Manager, Facebook Reality Labs, said that the new system is capable of learning about objects and locations, and can recognise user activities.

The technology can take note of behaviour trends of users in the past, to predict what they would be doing in the future. After analysing trends, and it asks the user whether they want to take certain actions. The objective is to make life more convenient for users.

Neuroethics programma

Facebook currently has its own neuroethics programme for evaluating security and privacy for technologies like the one used in the solution it is about to release. Yet, there is a need for individuals to trust that the data collected by the band will be secure.

Further news is expected on the wristband technology in the future.
